University Security Specialist

Position Overview
The Campus Safety Officer plays a vital role in ensuring the security and safety of the university environment. This position involves regular patrols of the campus and its surroundings, providing a reassuring presence to the community. The officer is trained to respond effectively to medical emergencies, security incidents, and any criminal activities, taking necessary actions to maintain safety.
Key Responsibilities
- Act as the primary contact for individuals reaching out for assistance via the security communication line during assigned shifts.
- Manage the opening, clearing, and securing of buildings and areas according to established schedules and instructions.
- Conduct frequent foot patrols across the campus, ensuring a visible presence aimed at fostering a sense of security within the university community, deterring criminal activity, enforcing institutional policies, and identifying safety hazards.
- Collaborate with Student Life and Conference Services when necessary, including securing locations and distributing access keys.
- Respond promptly to emergency situations as they arise.
- Report significant incidents or emergency maintenance needs to university officials or emergency services without delay.
- Document incidents, policy violations, and thefts through detailed written reports.
- Provide insights regarding identified safety hazards and maintenance needs.
- Investigate alarm activations and reset systems as required.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications and Skills
- Completion of a post-secondary program in Law & Security Administration, Public Safety, or a related field, or graduation from a recognized Police Academy.
- Experience in a university or educational setting is advantageous.
- Possession of a valid provincial Driver's License.
- Certification as a Medical First Responder or a commitment to obtain this certification within six months of employment.
- Valid Criminal Record Check (CRC) and Vulnerable Sector Checks (VSC) are required.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with fluency in English; proficiency in additional languages is a plus.
- Familiarity with computer technology, Microsoft Office, and inventory management systems.
- Ability to maintain the physical and mental readiness necessary for emergency response.
- Proven ability to work collaboratively with diverse groups, including faculty, students, staff, and external partners.
- Capability to effectively address emergency situations while ensuring safety and efficiency.
- Demonstrated professionalism and the ability to de-escalate confrontational situations through effective communication.
