Job Title: District Education Assistant

We are seeking a highly skilled and dedicated District Education Assistant to join our team at School District #72. As a key member of our inclusive education department, you will play a vital role in supporting students who are deaf or hard of hearing.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Facilitate communication and academic access for DHH students, utilizing remote mic systems and assistive technology as needed.
  • Provide sign language support for DHH students, classmates, and educational staff.
  • Offer tutorial assistance to DHH students and other students when available.
  • Ensure a safe learning environment by avoiding triggers and implementing recognized behavior management techniques.
  • Provide positive behavior support and utilize communication skills to diffuse escalated behaviors.
  • Participate in IEP meetings and collaborate with teachers, parents, and other parties as needed.
  • Provide general classroom support and social guidance to students.
  • Assist with toileting, feeding, and general cleanliness, as well as administer student medication under teacher supervision.
  • Transport students to program activities and directly supervise students in the pool as part of the swim program.
Requirements:
  • Two-year post-secondary diploma in Educational Assistant training or relevant discipline.
  • POPARD training an asset.
  • Level 1 First Aid certification an asset.
  • Current CPI certification.
  • Class 5 BC Driver's License.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL) at a minimum Level 2 on the ASL Proficiency Interview.
  • Knowledge of Deaf culture and community resources.
  • Experience working with DHH students and/or interacting with Deaf or Hard of Hearing people.
  • Understanding of language implications in education for DHH students.
  • Ability to adjust signing, education, and communication levels according to student needs.
  • Computer literacy and experience with technological assists.
