Overview
Reporting to the Senior Director of Institutional & Strategic Priorities, the Head of Institutional Initiatives is tasked with driving transformation through university-wide policy and program strategies. This role aims to challenge traditional frameworks and promote cultural evolution through innovative initiatives. The incumbent will oversee the Policy & Program unit, collaborating with both internal and external stakeholders across all levels of the institution.
The Director of Equity and Inclusion Programs also provides counsel on sensitive and confidential issues critical to the institution. This position participates in university committees and working groups as an advisor on equity and anti-racism policies, offering leadership on significant cross-institutional priorities.
Key Responsibilities
Strategic Leadership
- Directs the strategic vision of the EDI-R Office's Policy & Programs portfolio.
- Guides the development of long-term strategic plans to advance equity, diversity, inclusion, and anti-racism across the institution, offering expert advice to senior leaders, faculty, staff, and students on related issues.
- Engages with the university community to identify and address equity and anti-racism challenges affecting various protected groups.
- Represents the EDI-R leadership team, collaborating with various offices, including Indigenous Relations and Sexual Violence Prevention.
- Serves on committees addressing the challenges faced by historically marginalized communities.
- Consults with senior leaders on equity and anti-racism matters, ensuring confidentiality and sensitivity in managing complex issues.
- Works with the Inclusive Communications team to develop equity-focused communications.
- Maintains a comprehensive understanding of best practices in equity and anti-racism.
- Builds strong relationships with students, staff, and faculty to gather input on key initiatives.
Program Development and Implementation
- Evaluates and creates new strategies and programs to eliminate systemic barriers for underrepresented groups and foster a culture of equity.
- Oversees the planning, implementation, monitoring, and annual reporting of cross-institutional priorities.
- Utilizes project management methodologies to ensure effective execution of equity initiatives.
- Develops strategies to support equitable access to educational resources and reviews institutional practices through an equity lens.
- Stays informed on current literature and legal frameworks related to equity and anti-racism.
Policy Development and Oversight
- Leads the creation and review of institutional policies with an equity perspective.
- Analyzes existing policies to identify improvement areas regarding equity and anti-racism.
- Collaborates with stakeholders to gather feedback on policy proposals.
- Ensures compliance of new policies with legal standards and institutional values.
- Monitors the implementation of policies and contributes to necessary adjustments.
- Prepares reports on policy outcomes for internal and external stakeholders.
Risk Management and Record Keeping
- Conducts regular audits to ensure policy compliance and effectiveness.
- Monitors risk management strategies for relevance and efficacy.
- Maintains records of risk management activities.
- Provides updates to the Senior Director regarding risk management efforts.
- Ensures adherence to record-keeping requirements and confidentiality protocols.
Team Leadership and Development
- Leads the Policy & Programs unit.
- Recruits and manages staff to achieve unit objectives.
- Coaches and develops team members to foster professional growth.
- Conducts annual performance evaluations for direct reports.
Qualifications
- Master's degree in a relevant field, focusing on human rights, diversity, equity, and inclusion.
- Experience in senior roles addressing equity and inclusion in complex organizations.
- Proven project management skills with the ability to align priorities with strategic goals.
- Experience in implementing corporate equity policies.
- Demonstrated staff management experience with a focus on performance outcomes.
- Experience leading large-scale change initiatives and mentoring professionals.
- Strong understanding of the socio-political context of equity and anti-racism.
- Experience collaborating with diverse stakeholders on equity issues.
- Expertise in developing equity-related education and programming.
- Strong political acumen and strategic thinking abilities.
- Excellent organizational and project management skills.
- Ability to handle sensitive matters with discretion.
