We are seeking a highly skilled Biochemical Genetics Technologist to join our team at Provincial Laboratory Medicine Services (PLMS). As a key member of our laboratory team, you will be responsible for performing biochemical genetics procedures, operating laboratory equipment, and maintaining high standards of quality control.
Key Responsibilities- Perform biochemical genetics procedures, including amino acid, organic acid, and acylcarnitine analysis using techniques such as liquid chromatography mass spectrometry, tandem mass spectrometry, and gas chromatography mass spectrometry.
- Operate laboratory equipment, including liquid chromatography mass spectrometry, tandem mass spectrometry, and gas chromatography mass spectrometry.
- Maintain high standards of quality control, including preparing reagents, standards, and quality control material.
- Use laboratory computer systems for patient data entry, retrieval, and preparing laboratory worksheets and reports.
- Enter daily workload statistics into the laboratory information system.
- Analyze, calculate, and tabulate result sets using general and instrument-specific software systems.
- Prepare, evaluate, and issue corresponding reports.
- Maintain standardization and quality control of test procedures and monitor test results.
- Report unusual or questionable test results to the Pathologist or Head Technologist.
- Ensure that STAT and priority tests are assayed and reported promptly and in accordance with established protocols.
- Monitor laboratory supplies and stock up to adequate amounts.
- Orient new technologists, students, and residents in the use of molecular techniques.
- Participate in the development, evaluation, and implementation of new techniques with the guidance of senior technical staff and laboratory scientists.
- Participate in quality assurance programs for the Section.
- Certification with the Canadian Society of Medical Laboratory Science (CSMLS).
- Graduation from a recognized program in Medical Laboratory Technology plus two (2) years recent, related experience including biochemical genetics procedures or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
- Knowledge and technical competence to perform biochemical genetics procedures.
- Ability to operate related equipment, including knowledge of spreadsheet programs and experience with instrument-specific data analysis software.
- Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
- Ability to organize workload and set priorities.
- Physical ability to perform the duties of the job.
- Knowledge of computerized laboratory information systems.
