Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Senior Bilingual Underwriter to join our team at Foresters Financial. As a key member of our underwriting team, you will be responsible for reviewing insurance application files, establishing relationships with producers, and making informed underwriting decisions.

Key Responsibilities
  • Application Review: Review insurance application files for new business, reinstatements, and coverage change requests, ensuring all necessary information is gathered and evaluated.
  • Producer Relationships: Establish and maintain effective relationships with producers, communicating underwriting decisions and providing guidance on application requirements.
  • Underwriting Decisions: Balance investigative costs with risk management requirements to make informed underwriting decisions, determining steps to be taken to fully evaluate the application.
  • Medical Assessments: Order required medical tests/assessments, arrange for additional assessments from professional resources, and contact producers to obtain missing application information.
  • Research and Analysis: Research, interpret, and analyze information relevant to the application, including product details, legislation, rate manuals, and medical/drug reference books.
  • Documentation: Efficiently document the applicant file on the Underwriting systems as additional information is received, coding and entering data from received medical reports.
  • Underwriting Assessment: Complete a full underwriting assessment of the application following the receipt and review of all required information, considering competing factors such as new business income versus risk of financial loss.
  • Decision Making: Finalize the underwriting decision within approval limits, distinguishing standard from preferred and preferred plus risks, and authorize issues of the new or revised insurance certificate.
  • Reinsurance: Initiate processes to refer application files for reinsurance as required.
  • Correspondence: Compose related correspondence to members/producers regarding the information required to assess the application, advisory letters to the member and producer regarding the approval/decline of the application, and letters containing confidential medical information to the applicant's physician.
  • Legislative Review: Participate in the research, review, and analysis of underwriting-related legislation and regulations, and current underwriting issues and trends.
  • Collaboration: Work with the Medical Director on cases as required and participate in the review and development of new/revised underwriting policies, procedures, systems, and standards.
Key Qualifications
  • Experience: 5+ years of underwriting experience, with a strong background in medical and financial underwriting.
  • Certifications: Achieved AALU and working towards FALU/FLMI designations.
  • Knowledge: Strong medical and financial underwriting knowledge, experience with simplified issue and final expense type products, and knowledge of underwriting theory, principles, methods, systems, processes, and standards.
  • Skills: Demonstrated risk assessment skills, leadership skills, consultation skills, strong verbal and written communication skills in both French and English, and ability to learn and understand Foresters insurance products and contract provisions.
  • Language: Strong proficiency in both French and English, with the ability to communicate effectively with producers and applicants.
