Pharmacy Technician

The Pharmacy Technician functions in alignment with the competency standards and guidelines for Pharmacy Technicians as stipulated by the regulatory body and applicable legislation, while adhering to organizational policies and unit-specific protocols. This role involves processing medication orders that have been clinically assessed for therapeutic validity and sanctioned by a licensed pharmacist. The technician is responsible for receiving both verbal and written prescriptions from healthcare providers, ensuring their completeness and authenticity. Duties include preparing, processing, and compounding prescriptions, while guaranteeing the accuracy and thoroughness of dispensed medications by verifying order entries and conducting final checks. The technician also manages prescriptions for temporary patient leaves and facilitates the transfer of prescriptions between pharmacies. Accurate entry and maintenance of drug and personal health information in the pharmacy information system is essential. Additionally, the technician maintains inventory levels and performs assigned clerical tasks.

Key Responsibilities

  • Process clinically reviewed and approved medication orders for patient distribution.
  • Receive and verify prescriptions from healthcare providers, ensuring authenticity and completeness.
  • Prepare and process prescriptions by entering orders, measuring, counting, and packaging medications, including compounding sterile pharmaceutical products as per established protocols.
  • Verify the accuracy and completeness of dispensed prescriptions prepared by self or colleagues.
  • Ensure precise entry of drug and personal health information in the pharmacy information system.
  • Manage the transfer of prescriptions to and from other pharmacies.
  • Process prescriptions for temporary patient leave by reviewing and converting inpatient medication orders approved by a pharmacist.
  • Maintain accurate records of medication verification and quality assurance checks.
  • Distribute medications and manage relevant inventory and narcotic records.
  • Maintain stock levels and fulfill requisitions for wardstock and narcotics.
  • Identify and manage outdated medications by checking stock for expiration dates.
  • Ensure cleanliness and orderliness in department work areas, stocking pharmaceuticals and ensuring safe disposal of hazardous materials.
  • Perform clerical duties such as data entry, answering calls, filing, and maintaining medication records.
  • Undertake additional related duties as required.

Qualifications

Current registration as a Pharmacy Technician with the relevant regulatory body.

You possess:

  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Physical capability to perform the duties of the position.
  • Proficiency in keyboarding.
  • Organizational skills.
  • Ability to operate relevant equipment.
  • Commitment to understanding and supporting the principles of reconciliation and cultural safety.
  • A strong asset would be knowledge of the social, economic, and historical contexts affecting Indigenous communities.
