Job Description

The temperature of the cryolite bath is a critical parameter for the operation of aluminum electrolysis cells. Currently, it is measured intermittently due to the rapid corrosion of thermal probes (thermocouples) in the cryolite bath, limiting their continuous use.

We aim to significantly extend their lifespan by designing new alloys that provide exceptional corrosion resistance. Developing a durable probe would enable better control of the electrolysis process. To achieve this, we will develop a new generation of protective coatings based on alloys produced by mechanosynthesis and deposited by thermal spraying. This project will bring together researchers from the Hydrogen Research Institute and industry partners with expertise in materials science, high-temperature electrochemistry, thermodynamic modeling, and protective coating production.

The successful candidate will be responsible for designing metal alloys using thermodynamic simulation tools (such as FactSage). Key tasks include:

  • Identifying new families of alloys with enhanced corrosion resistance and producing them
  • Studying their theoretical and experimental resistance to degradation by fluorinated salts and oxidation at high temperatures
  • Determining the corrosion phases that will be formed

The selected individual will work closely with a team of experts in applied electrochemistry and materials synthesis. This project is conducted in collaboration with two industrial partners, including a leading aluminum producer.

Qualifications

A Master's degree in chemistry, chemical engineering, metallurgy, materials science, or a relevant discipline is required. Knowledge of thermodynamics and/or corrosion in a molten salt environment is essential. Experience in aluminum or metal corrosion is considered an asset.
