The School of Hospitality & Tourism at Selkirk College is seeking a skilled Instructional Assistant to provide in-person support to instructors and students in the Supervisory Food and Beverage Service courses. These courses offer hands-on experience in the fundamentals of food and beverage service, with a focus on the impact it has on the success of a restaurant. Students gain theoretical and practical experience in the operation of the Scholar's Dining Room and by hosting large events to the public.

Main Responsibilities

The successful candidate will assist in:

  • Supporting the educational process by assisting faculty and students.
  • Maintaining a positive learning environment.
  • Preparing materials and course-related resources.
  • Participating in demonstrations and supervising hands-on learning activities.
  • Completing related administrative duties as assigned.
  • Upholding safety practices and professionalism at all times.

Requirements

The ideal candidate will have:

  • A robust understanding of the subject matter and its relationship to the hospitality & tourism industry.
  • Excellent communication, teamwork, and time management skills.
  • Proficient computer skills and experience (including Microsoft Word, Excel).
  • Working knowledge of Moodle or other Learning Management System or experience in online delivery is an asset.
  • Ability to relate with a diversity of students from multiple cultural backgrounds.

Education and Experience

The successful candidate will have:

  • Three (3) years in the hospitality industry with a combination of post-secondary education and experience equaling a minimum of seven (7) years.
  • A diploma in a related field; however, preference may be given to those with a Degree or Masters in a related discipline.
  • Management experience in the hospitality industry is an asset.
  • Previous teaching experience in a post-secondary environment is an asset.
  • Provincial Instructional Diploma or equivalent is an asset.

This is a non-regular, part-time (40%) position commencing September 3, 2024, and ending April 25, 2025. Salary and benefits are in accordance with the BCGEU Collective Agreement. The salary range is $2,210.65 - $3,542.46 (at a 100% appointment) bi-weekly based on qualifications and experience.
