Community-Based Child Mental Health and Addiction Specialist

Under the supervision of the Mental Health Clinical Supervisor, the Community-Based Child Mental Health and Addiction Specialist will conduct clinical evaluations, develop treatment plans, and provide counseling services to children and their families. This role also involves offering consultations related to community behavioral assessments and interventions. The primary focus is to deliver mental health and addiction counseling services using a holistic approach that aligns with the vision, mission, and core values of the Sioux Lookout First Nations Health Authority and the Anishnawbe Health Plan. The Specialist will coordinate integrated service delivery from referral through to discharge for all assigned children, youth, and their families receiving agency services.

Qualifications:
  • Preference will be given to individuals of First Nations ancestry (OHRC, Part II, Special Employment).
  • A minimum of a two-year Social Work Diploma or a diploma in a related field, along with three years of experience in a social service role within a First Nation community.
  • At least two years of experience providing counseling services to First Nations children, youth, or their families.
  • A combination of training and practical experience with First Nations peoples, communities, cultures, traditions, and teachings.
  • The capability to fulfill the job requirements consistently.
Roles and Responsibilities:

In collaboration with the Clinical Supervisor, the Community-Based Child Mental Health and Addiction Specialist is tasked with:

  • Coordinating and delivering counseling, consultation, clinical assessments, therapy, and follow-up for all clients in line with the agency's mandate, policies, and procedures, utilizing a holistic approach for families and caregivers;
  • Providing counseling and case management for clients facing mental health challenges, while coordinating care with consulting psychiatrists and local general practitioners;
  • Administering mental health and addiction assessments, offering pre-treatment support services for clients needing residential treatment, and delivering counseling and healing services;
  • Completing certification in standardized assessment tools;
  • Documenting accurate written reports, assessments, and maintaining client files in accordance with the standards and procedures of the Sioux Lookout First Nations Health Authority;
  • Recommending alternative services and community resources to children and families, assisting them in connecting with these resources;
  • Facilitating access to traditional healing and cultural programming when appropriate;
  • Actively participating in team meetings and treatment conferences to ensure integrated service delivery through effective information sharing;
  • Contributing to the evaluation of Nodin Mental Health Services and system effectiveness, and recommending necessary changes to the Clinical Supervisor;
  • Completing all required performance statistics reports;
  • Engaging in client-related interagency meetings and case conferencing;
  • Ensuring collaboration with Bands and Council, First Nation Communities, Elders, schools, and related agencies in providing services to clients in compliance with the Mental Health Act;
  • Promoting healthy lifestyles within First Nation communities through information sharing, liaison activities, agency promotion, and mental health and addiction services;
  • Providing education and training to agency staff and community members regarding behavioral assessment, planning, and intervention for individuals, families, and groups;
  • Reporting any incidents or suspicions of physical and sexual abuse to the Clinical Supervisor immediately and ensuring all necessary documentation is completed; participating in regular debriefing and supervision; fostering a healthy and respectful work environment; and accurately completing SLFNHA administrative forms (e.g., PO's, TA's, Expense Claims & Timesheets);
  • Responding appropriately and promptly to crisis situations involving clients, including assessing and addressing high-risk behaviors (self-harm, suicide);
  • Maintaining certification in the Child and Adolescent Functional Assessment Scale (CAFAS) and other relevant initiatives from the Ministry of Children and Youth Services.

  • Participating constructively in the supervision process with their immediate Supervisor.
