The Role

Aecon Industrial provides integrated solutions to key clients through operational excellence and reliability. With the capability to self-perform across a wide range of industrial sectors, Aecon Industrial effectively manages projects in various fields, including Renewable Energy, Natural Gas Distribution, Oil and Gas, Water, Mining, Cogeneration Energy, and Chemical industries. We are also recognized for pioneering prefabricated piping services that enhance site labor management and the integration of specialized coating systems into our fabrication processes.

We currently have an opening for a full-time permanent position as a Senior Water Estimator. Reporting to the Chief Estimator, the Senior Water Estimator will be tasked with generating precise and timely cost estimates for designated water projects. This role involves delivering well-organized estimates, budgets, and schedules while effectively managing Aecon's risk.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Ensure the accuracy of bid costs in relation to actual project costs, sharing accountability for the overall financial performance of awarded projects.
  • Analyze documents, drawings, specifications, proposals, and addendums in preparation for pricing.
  • Conduct estimate-related communications with clients, both orally and in writing.
  • Review project sites prior to preparing pricing.
  • Gather input from Operations staff as necessary.
  • Perform quantity take-offs from construction drawings when applicable.
  • Obtain pricing from suppliers and subcontractors to incorporate into estimates.
  • Formulate all costs for tender submissions, including labor, equipment, materials, rentals, and subcontracts.
  • Ensure the accuracy and completeness of tender submissions.
  • Oversee the distribution of relevant documentation upon project award.
  • Track, forecast, and report weekly on the financial and operational performance of awarded projects, providing data for month-end reconciliations when applicable.
  • Manage scope changes as necessary.
  • Coordinate invoicing and progress payment activities when applicable.
  • Maintain files and correspondence for active and completed projects.
  • Collaborate with Operations to drive project success and learning.
  • Ensure compliance and consistency in the estimating process and procedures.
  • Conduct post-bid and post-project analysis, ensuring that lessons learned are communicated effectively.
  • Assist with RFPs and general contract tender submissions.
  • Support prequalification submissions, RFQs, and RFIs as required.
  • Adhere to Aecon's risk management policies and procedures.
  • Foster positive relationships and serve as a key contact for clients, consultants, and subcontractors.
  • Safeguard all forms of proprietary information.
  • Maintain estimating data systems to ensure they are current.
  • Assist in training new estimating staff as appropriate.
Qualifications:
  • 4-8 years of experience in the construction industry, specifically within an estimating department focused on the Water Sector.
  • Proficient in reading and interpreting construction drawings and documents.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of contract language, terms and conditions, and bonding.
  • In-depth understanding of applicable industry standards.
  • Consistent adherence to established standards.
  • General knowledge of contract, owner, and engineer general terms and conditions.
  • Strong ability to interpret schematics and drawings.
  • Solid understanding of job cost fundamentals for typical items and scopes where design and/or schematics have been provided, along with basic accounting and reporting principles.
  • Proven track record of successful bids that demonstrate alignment between bid cost targets and actual construction costs across all work scopes.
  • Ability to interpret specifications related to all project scopes, including risk considerations.
  • Regularly perform on-site investigations for each tender, interpreting field constraints and incorporating findings into bids to ensure constructability.
