Position Overview

The role of the pipelayer is integral to a proficient construction crew that effectively installs underground utilities in accordance with approved designs, specifications, and relevant codes, while upholding high standards of quality and ensuring a safe working environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Executing the installation of underground utilities to specified grades and adhering to applicable construction standards, including storm, water, and sewer mains and services.
  • Identifying existing utilities and operating heavy machinery to safely expose them without causing damage.
  • Detecting existing pipes that require repair or replacement using magnetic or radio detection methods.
  • Installing ducting for Hydro, Telus, and Shaw services.
  • Employing various shoring techniques to create a secure excavation for personnel entry.
  • Setting up pipe lasers and establishing the correct design grade.
  • Organizing all necessary tools and equipment for the job at the start of each shift.
  • Excavating with machinery to ensure trench grade, bedding depths, and backfill are executed accurately.
  • Laying pipes to the specified design grade and ensuring proper compaction.
  • Assembling mechanically restrained fittings, valves, and pipes according to manufacturer specifications.
  • Cutting concrete and installing manholes, box culverts, chambers, etc., for various applications, including live utility main overbuilds.
  • Promptly informing the supervisor of any installation conflicts.
  • Performing other related duties as necessary.

Required Qualifications

  • At least 1 year of experience as a pipelayer or skilled laborer in a utility installation environment, with substantial experience in the installation of storm, water, and sanitary mains and services, as well as Hydro, Telus, and Shaw installations.
  • A valid Class 5 driver's license.
  • A thorough understanding of the tools and equipment essential for the role.
  • Proficiency in cutting and beveling pipes.
  • A solid grasp of safe excavation practices and WorkSafeBC guidelines, with the ability to work safely around excavation equipment and in confined spaces.
  • Knowledge of assembling and installing shoring or trench cages in excavations as needed.
  • Awareness of issues related to ground disturbance.
  • Capability to accurately read, comprehend, and interpret civil construction plans and drawings.
