About the Opportunity

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Public Health Nutrition Specialist to join our team at Nova Scotia Health Authority. As a key member of our Healthy Communities Team, you will play a critical role in addressing local population health needs and taking action to improve population health and reduce health inequities.

The successful candidate will be responsible for leading healthy eating and food security initiatives, as well as participating in other health promotion work as needed. You will work closely with community partners across multiple levels to take action and advance policy and system change to create supportive social, economic, and physical environments that protect and promote health.

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Developing and implementing evidence-informed strategies to promote healthy eating and food security
  • Building and maintaining partnerships with community organizations, schools, and municipalities to advance healthy communities work
  • Providing technical assistance and support to community partners to implement provincial nutrition policies and standards
  • Conducting community assessments and evaluations to inform program development and implementation
  • Developing and maintaining relationships with key stakeholders, including government agencies, community organizations, and healthcare providers

About You

We are seeking a candidate with the following qualifications and experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in Human Nutrition or a related field, plus 5 years of community-based/public health experience, or a Master's degree in Community Nutrition/Public Health/Health Promotion, plus 2 years of community-based/public health experience
  • Must be licensed with and a member in good standing of a provincial regulatory body (Nova Scotia College of Dietitians and Nutritionists) and hold PDt (Professional Dietitian) or RD (Registered Dietitian) designation
  • Experience in planning, development, implementation, and evaluation of nutrition and food security related programs, policies, services, and initiatives
  • Demonstrated knowledge translation and communication skills, including written and verbal
  • Demonstrated success in building strategic partnerships, networks, coalitions, and collaborative working relationships with a variety of internal and external partners to support healthy communities work
  • Understanding of a population-based approach
  • Understanding of health equity and the impacts on health
  • Demonstrated planning, organizational, and time management skills
  • Ability to deal with competing priorities
  • Demonstrated advocacy skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work cooperatively and collaboratively in a multidisciplinary setting with a strong focus on citizen/community
  • Demonstrated accountability and responsibility
  • Demonstrated judgment, decision-making, and problem-solving skills
  • Demonstrated leadership abilities
  • Proficiency in a variety of computer software programs and technologies
  • Travel will be required, so a valid driver's license and access to a reliable vehicle are necessary
  • Competencies in other languages are an asset, with French being preferred

Hours
  • Temporary Part-Time/50% FTE/35 hours bi-weekly
  • Starting September 2024 to December 2024 (approximate 4-month term)

Compensation and Benefits

$45.86 hourly

Successful candidates may be eligible for our benefits package, which includes health, dental, travel, long-term disability, and life insurance coverage, as well as a defined benefit pension plan (permanent long assignments only)
