About This Role

The Yarmouth Regional Hospital (YRH) and Digby General Hospital (DGH) are in search of dedicated emergency medicine specialists to fulfill a 1.5 FTE position across both facilities. These hospitals serve a combined population of approximately 60,000 residents in the southwestern region of Nova Scotia. The successful candidate may also engage in educational opportunities through the family medicine residency program at Yarmouth and collaborate with medical students from Dalhousie University.

YRH, established in 1912, has evolved into a comprehensive healthcare facility catering to the needs of the communities in Shelburne, Yarmouth, and Digby Counties. With 124 inpatient beds, YRH offers a variety of primary and secondary care services, including:

DGH, founded in 1924, provides comprehensive medical services to the local population, including primary, inpatient, restorative, and ambulatory care, as well as day surgery. The facility features a 20-bed medical and alternate level of care unit that collaborates closely with the collaborative emergency centre in Annapolis Royal and Yarmouth. Additionally, DGH includes a 13-bed restorative care unit focused on patient rehabilitation.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct thorough examinations of patients and order necessary diagnostic tests and laboratory procedures.
  • Provide guidance to patients regarding healthcare, health promotion, and disease prevention.
  • Consult and refer patients to other medical professionals as needed.
  • Act as an advocate for patients' needs and well-being.
  • Prescribe and administer medications, treatments, inoculations, and vaccinations.
Work Schedule
  • Full-time position shared between YRH and DGH.
Qualifications
  • Certification in Emergency Medicine from the College of Family Physicians of Canada is an asset.
  • Eligibility for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Nova Scotia (CPSNS) is required.
  • Family physicians must be eligible for certification with the College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC).
  • Membership with the Canadian Medical Protective Association (CMPA) is necessary.
  • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification is required.
  • Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) certification is necessary.
  • Completion of Care of the Critically Ill Surgical Patient (CCrISP) course is preferred.
  • Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certification is beneficial.
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification is an asset.
  • Experience in an emergency department is advantageous.
