ROLE OVERVIEW:

Railway Track Maintenance Technicians are integral members of the Rail Infrastructure team, tasked with the ongoing upkeep and safety of our extensive track network. Responsibilities include inspecting, repairing, and replacing rails, ties, switches, and ballast. A passion for physical work and an appreciation for outdoor environments in Northern Ontario, combined with a strong commitment to safety, are essential for success in this role.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Execute tasks related to track maintenance, including but not limited to pulling and driving spikes, replacing ties, surfacing track, and changing rail and other components.
  • Maintain a clear railroad right-of-way by removing brush, vegetation, and snow.
  • Operate all tools and equipment associated with track maintenance safely and efficiently.
  • Interpret documents such as safety regulations, operating instructions, and federal and provincial guidelines.
  • Adhere strictly to all safety protocols and policies.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience in the labor sector.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively within a team.
  • Capability to perform physically demanding tasks, including heavy lifting.
  • Good hand-eye coordination.
  • Willingness to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • Flexibility to work different schedules based on operational needs, including:
    • 5 days on / 2 days off
    • 7 days on / 7 days off
    • 4 days on / 3 days off
    • 8 days on / 6 days off
  • Ability to work in remote locations.
  • Possession of a valid driver's license.
  • Willingness to travel frequently and be away from home for extended periods.
  • Ability to qualify under Canadian Rail Operating Rules (CROR) and Transport Canada Rules Respecting Track Safety.
  • Commitment to health and safety standards.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Frequent lifting of weights up to 50 lbs.
  • Occasional lifting of weights up to 75 lbs.
  • Extended periods of standing and walking.
  • Carrying objects weighing between 50 to 75 lbs.
  • Utilizing hand tools that may exceed 20 lbs.
  • Working outdoors in various weather conditions, including exposure to dust and pollen.
  • Regular exposure to noise and vibration.
  • Navigating rough terrain and embankments.
