Position Overview
The Registered Practical Nurse (RPN) exemplifies clinical proficiency and adheres to the core competencies outlined by the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO), along with the policies and procedures of Southlake Regional Health Centre. The RPN collaborates effectively as part of the healthcare team, delivering direct patient care in accordance with the standards set by the CNO. This role involves critical decision-making regarding care-provider assignments and necessitates ongoing consultation and collaboration among healthcare professionals. A commitment to lifelong learning is essential for all nursing staff.
Key Responsibilities
- Deliver patient and family-centered care within the RPN scope of practice, guided by the three-factor framework of the College of Nurses of Ontario.
- Adhere to established hospital policies and procedures, including emergency protocols.
- Ensure practice aligns with entry-to-practice competencies, standards, guidelines, and relevant legislation.
- Communicate effectively with patients, families, and all members of the healthcare team.
- Collaborate with Registered Nurses (RNs) to provide comprehensive care for patients with complex health conditions.
- Work in partnership with other members of the interprofessional healthcare team.
- Provide consultation and clinical support to colleagues as necessary.
- Contribute to the ongoing assessment and documentation of each patient's health status.
- Assist in developing and implementing the Plan of Care and evaluate its effectiveness.
- Support the orientation and training of new staff members and students within clinical units.
- Act as a role model to promote safe and exemplary care practices.
- Perform additional duties as assigned by the Manager or delegate.
Skills and Qualifications
- Preferred: Two years of current Operating Room experience.
- Ability to prioritize and organize tasks based on patient needs.
- Capability to operate within the full scope of nursing practice as per the College of Nurses of Ontario.
- Demonstrated commitment to continuous learning and professional development.
- Exceptional communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
- Commitment to patient and family-centered care and teamwork.
- Exemplary individual leadership skills.
- Understanding and compliance with safety policies that foster a secure and inclusive environment.
- Proficient in Electronic Documentation.

Qualifications
- RPN diploma from an accredited nursing school.
- RPN Certificate of Registration in good standing from the College of Nurses of Ontario.
- Current BLS certification is required.
- Completion of the RPN Operating Room Course is necessary.
