Sydney, Nova Scotia, Canada The Government of Nova Scotia Full time

Competition #: 43870

Department: Community Services

Type of Employment: Relief

Union Status: Exclusion - Non Union - NSPG

About the Department

The Department of Community Services (DCS) is a comprehensive and varied organization that offers a wide range of programs and services. These include Child and Family Wellbeing, Employment Support Services, Income Assistance, Homelessness and Supportive Housing, and Disability Support Programs.

Our mission is to advocate for and assist vulnerable individuals in Nova Scotia, promoting independence, self-sufficiency, and security. We collaborate with a dedicated network of professionals across the province to achieve shared goals and positive outcomes for all.

Opportunity Overview

This position is considered a rewarding career path for those who are compassionate and creative. As a Child and Youth Care Practitioner, you will have the chance to forge meaningful connections with youth and families during their most challenging moments.

If you possess a passion for helping others and wish to utilize your diverse talents in a supportive environment, this role may be an excellent fit for you.

This Roster will be utilized to fill various relief positions in the upcoming months.

Key Responsibilities

As a Child & Youth Care Practitioner, you will be responsible for providing care and programming for children and youth under the care of the Minister of Community Services or Mi'kmaw Family & Children's Services, particularly those exhibiting moderate to severe emotional and trauma-related responses.

Your role will involve:

  • Modeling appropriate behaviors and advocating for children, youth, and families to access necessary supports and services.
  • Creating opportunities for recreational and leisure activities that foster relationship-building and community connections.
  • Participating in community outings, appointments, and meetings.
  • Contributing to a team that ensures a nurturing and secure environment for children and youth, assisting them with self-regulation, conflict resolution, and developing healthy relationship skills.
  • Collaborating with external professionals, including social workers, healthcare providers, law enforcement, probation services, and educational institutions as needed.

Additionally, you will be responsible for maintaining accurate documentation, case management notes, and crisis intervention, as well as assisting in the development of programs and activities that reflect your unique talents and passion for social and emotional growth.

Qualifications and Experience

The ideal candidate will have completed a Child & Youth Care Worker diploma from an accredited post-secondary institution. Notice to Pending Graduates: If you expect to graduate from your program soon, we encourage you to apply.

Success in this role requires an understanding of trauma-informed care, as well as knowledge of the physical, psychological, and emotional needs of youth in care and their families. You should also demonstrate an understanding of healthy child development and provide opportunities for youth to enhance their life skills through support and guidance.

Key attributes include:

  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
  • Strong communication skills (both oral and written) and the ability to facilitate group activities.
  • Familiarity with various software applications, including Microsoft Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint).

While not mandatory, experience with case management systems and previous work in child welfare, early childhood development, crisis services, shelters, and support for individuals with disabilities and substance dependency are considered valuable assets.

We will evaluate qualifications and competencies through various methods, including written assessments, standardized tests, interviews, and reference checks.

Equivalency

This position presents an excellent opportunity for many. We recognize equivalent combinations of training, education, and experience, allowing individuals from diverse backgrounds to contribute their skills and expertise. Equivalencies may include:

  • A related bachelor's degree in social sciences (e.g., Psychology, Sociology, Social Work, Community Studies)
  • Related diplomas in Social Services, Disability Support, and Human Services
  • Education and experience in Early Childhood Education (ECE)
  • Two (2) years of relevant experience supporting children and youth.

Applicants relying on education and experience equivalencies must clearly demonstrate such equivalencies in their application.

Benefits

Depending on employment status and union agreements, the Government of Nova Scotia offers a comprehensive benefits package, including a Defined Benefit Pension Plan, Health, Dental, Life Insurance, General Illness, Short and Long Term Disability, Vacation, and Employee and Family Assistance Programs.

Working Conditions

Your resilience and ability to make sound decisions in routine and crisis situations are essential. The environment for child and youth care differs significantly from traditional office settings, requiring a focus on safety and security for youth, visitors, employees, and the public. While precautions are taken, children and youth may exhibit pain-based responses that necessitate the use of Nonviolent Crisis Intervention (NCI) techniques to maintain a safe environment.

The facility operates 24/7, with scheduled rotating shifts for employees.

Additional Information

A valid driver's license and access to a reliable vehicle are required.

A relief employee is not regularly scheduled by the Employer but works on an as-needed basis as operational requirements dictate. As such, relief employees do not have guaranteed hours of work.
