Compensation and Benefits Specialist

Your Role

Reporting directly to the Vice President of People & Culture, you will oversee the compensation and benefits segment within the HR framework at Puratos Canada. In light of our rapid expansion, your contributions will be vital in establishing payroll systems, managing benefits administration, and refining communication regarding payroll matters.

Key Responsibilities

Payroll Management:

  • Verify payroll information, execute payroll transactions, ensuring precise and timely salary disbursements (including benefits, garnishments, taxes, union dues, remittances, reimbursements, and deductions).
  • Oversee annual tax processes and necessary documentation, including tax calculations for international employees and payroll accruals.
  • Collaborate with various departments, such as HR, Finance, and IT, to improve payroll efficiency.
  • Ensure accurate and timely processing of new hires, transfers, promotions, terminations, and salary adjustments.
  • Supervise the bi-weekly or monthly payroll cycle to guarantee all employees receive correct and prompt payments.

Benefits Management:

  • Administer employee benefits programs, including retirement plans, medical, dental, life, and disability insurance.
  • Coordinate enrollments, terminations, and claims, ensuring employee records and benefit files are current and accurate.
  • Provide guidance to employees regarding benefit program specifics.
  • Engage with external service providers concerning remittances, plan structures, and renewals.
  • Identify trends in benefits and collaborate with stakeholders to assess and recommend necessary changes.
  • Assist with benefit cost analysis for unionized plans as needed.
  • Ensure adherence to regulations governing benefits.

Employee Engagement:

  • Inform employees about payroll processes and benefit plans, addressing inquiries and concerns promptly. Prepare and deliver presentations as necessary.
  • Provide orientation on payroll and benefits to new employees.
  • Act as a liaison between employees and benefit providers during the claims process.

Process Enhancement and Standardization:

  • Design and implement streamlined payroll processes, considering automation and industry best practices.
  • Establish uniform procedures across locations to optimize payroll operations.
  • Assess current payroll systems, identify inefficiencies, and consolidate processes where feasible.

Expectations from You

  • A college or bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, business, or a related field is preferred. We are open to considering candidates whose experience and exceptional skills compensate for educational qualifications.
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience as a Payroll Specialist or Payroll Administrator, with prior experience in benefits administration.
  • Demonstrated ability to integrate payroll and benefits into a cohesive program.
  • Knowledge of provincial and federal employment laws.
  • Proficiency in various systems (Payroll: Dayforce & HRIS: SuccessFactors).
  • Detail-oriented with a strong focus on deadlines.
  • Excellent analytical skills.
  • Strong communication and presentation abilities.
  • A collaborative mindset and a team-oriented approach.
