About British Columbia Children's Hospital

British Columbia Children's Hospital (BCCH) is dedicated to providing care for the most critically ill or injured children and adolescents. It also offers developmental and rehabilitation services across the province, operating numerous specialized health programs through various health service provider groups. As a leading acute care teaching facility, BCCH is committed to advancing health and care through the BC Children's Hospital Research Institute and in collaboration with the University of British Columbia.

Organizational Overview

BCCH is a part of the Provincial Health Services Authority (PHSA), which oversees the planning, management, and evaluation of specialty and province-wide health care services throughout British Columbia. Our core values emphasize our commitment to excellence: Respect individuals – Show compassion – Embrace innovation – Foster partnerships – Serve with purpose.

Division of Pediatric Emergency Medicine

As the primary pediatrics clinical training site for the Faculty of Medicine at the University of British Columbia (UBC), BCCH is recognized as the foremost acute care teaching facility in the province. It conducts research to enhance health and knowledge through the BC Children's Hospital Research Institute (BCCHR) and partnerships with other institutions. Recently, BCCH has been accredited as the sole Pediatric Trauma Center in British Columbia, serving as the definitive care site for all major trauma cases in the province.

Position Overview

We are seeking Pediatric Emergency Physicians for Regular Full Time/Part Time Positions. Clinical commitments are flexible and can be negotiated between Full-Time Equivalents (FTE).

The Children's Hospital Emergency Physicians Associates (CHEPA) is a formal democratic assembly of Pediatric Emergency Physicians dedicated to delivering exceptional clinical service in the Emergency Department of BCCH, with a strong focus on clinical care, research, and education. The facility features a state-of-the-art simulation center and the UBC Centre for Health Educational Scholarship (CHES), providing opportunities for faculty interested in educational research, while the CFRI supports clinician scholars.

As a Pediatric Emergency Physician, you will engage in a clinical and academic career, ensuring excellence in addressing the acute medical needs of children and youth. The successful candidate is expected to provide provincial leadership in pediatric emergency medicine, contribute to undergraduate, postgraduate, and continuing medical education programs within the Division of Emergency Medicine and the Department of Pediatrics, participate in divisional and departmental operational initiatives, and support clinical and health services research. Candidates should have a non-clinical area of expertise (e.g., quality improvement, education, POCUS, toxicology) to enhance our collective efforts in meeting University, Health Authority, and Provincial mandates. We are looking for highly motivated individuals who will actively engage in divisional activities beyond clinical responsibilities.

Qualifications

Applicants must have completed a subspecialty residency training program in Pediatric Emergency Medicine or Emergency Medicine accredited by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC), or hold CCFP-EM certification. Those without subspecialty residency training in Pediatric Emergency Medicine must possess experience in an Emergency Department with significant pediatric volume and complexity. Candidates must be eligible for a specialist license as determined by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of British Columbia.

Additional Information

UBC Clinical Faculty Rank will be aligned with qualifications and experience. Applications will be reviewed until the positions are filled.

We are committed to employment equity and encourage applications from qualified individuals, particularly those from visible minority groups, women, Aboriginal persons, persons with disabilities, and individuals of diverse sexual orientations and gender identities. Canadians and permanent residents of Canada will be prioritized.

We recognize that reconciliation is an ongoing process and a shared responsibility. The BC Government's passage of the Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act marks a significant step forward in this journey, and all health authorities are expected to support this initiative as we collaborate with Indigenous Peoples to foster sustainable reconciliation.
