Laboratory Data Entry Specialist
Join the Provincial Laboratory Medicine Services team and contribute to the vital work of healthcare in British Columbia.
Key Responsibilities
- Welcome patients by verifying test requisitions, confirming demographic details, and accurately entering this information into the laboratory information system. Generate and affix labels with essential patient data.
- Collect blood samples from patients, ensuring proper identification and utilizing techniques such as venipuncture and skin puncture while adhering to safety protocols.
- Prepare specimens for analysis by confirming identification, determining the need for additional tests, and processing samples through centrifugation and blood film preparation.
- Manage specimen processing, including receiving, sorting, labeling, and logging data into the laboratory database, while ensuring proper storage according to established guidelines.
- Coordinate the dispatch of specimens to referral laboratories, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements during packaging and logging.
- Perform reception duties, including answering inquiries from patients and healthcare staff, relaying messages, and communicating test results as necessary.
- Generate and distribute laboratory reports and labels, ensuring accurate information is provided to physicians and nursing staff.
- Maintain a clean and organized work environment by performing routine cleaning and identifying stock levels for necessary supplies.
- Schedule patient appointments using a computerized system, managing follow-ups and adjustments as required.
- Conduct ECG tests, ensuring proper attachment of electrodes and accurate reporting of results.
- Undertake additional related tasks as assigned to support laboratory operations.
Qualifications and Skills
- Completion of Grade 12 and a recognized Lab Assistant training program, along with one year of relevant experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to interact effectively with diverse individuals.
- Physical capability to perform the duties associated with this role.
- Organizational skills to manage multiple tasks efficiently.
- Proficiency in operating laboratory equipment and data entry systems.
- Commitment to fostering reconciliation and understanding of Indigenous Peoples' rights and experiences.
