Position Overview:
Volunteer Manitoba is dedicated to enhancing the lives of individuals with intellectual disabilities through sports. As a vital part of our organization, the Curling Head Coach will play a crucial role in leading our curling programs and fostering a supportive environment for athletes.
Key Responsibilities:The selected candidate will be responsible for:
- Developing comprehensive seasonal plans for club activities, including weekly training sessions and long-term objectives.
- Maintaining open communication with assistant coaches, volunteers, parents, and athletes to ensure a cohesive team environment.
- Overseeing practice sessions, prioritizing the safety and well-being of all participants.
- Ensuring all athletes and volunteers are properly registered for participation.
- Attending regular meetings with regional and provincial coaching staff to stay aligned with organizational goals.
- Preparing athletes for competitions and events through dedicated training and support.
- Participating in competitions alongside athletes to provide guidance and encouragement.
- Submitting necessary documentation, including Club Property Inventory and travel requests, to the Director of Program Development.
- Regularly updating athlete and coach enrollments in the SOM Portal throughout the season.
- Engaging in regional and provincial events, including meetings and fundraising efforts.
- Implementing an Emergency Action Plan (EAP) to ensure participant safety.
- Maintaining consistent communication with SOM staff and regional leadership.
The ideal candidate will possess:
- Experience and knowledge in curling.
- Commitment to the Special Olympics Manitoba Coaches Code of Conduct.
- Understanding of the organization's Constitution, By-Laws, and guiding principles.
- A passion for the mission of Special Olympics Manitoba.
- Must be at least 18 years old.
- Ability to instruct sport skills effectively.
- Experience in competition at an appropriate level.
- Strong role modeling skills, promoting fair play and socially appropriate behavior.
- A willingness to mentor program volunteers and assistant coaches.
Additionally, the candidate should be prepared to:
- Complete subsidized NCCP courses within the first two years of coaching.
- Pass the Making Ethical Decisions (MED) Evaluation.
- Demonstrate a solid understanding of the sport and related training methods.
- Participate in annual coaches' meetings to review policies and procedures.
- Support and encourage assistant coaches and volunteers in obtaining certification.
- Collaborate with SOM staff during program evaluations.
- Assist athletes in achieving their personal goals and maximizing their potential.
- Enhance personal and professional development through coaching and administrative skill improvement.
- Engage in networking opportunities and build lasting friendships within the community.
- Participate in recognition events celebrating the achievements of athletes.
- Experience the fulfillment of working with athletes and embodying the spirit of Special Olympics.
Open to candidates aged 18 and above.
Time Commitment:The role requires a commitment of one to two sessions per week, lasting 1 to 2.5 hours, with some weekends dedicated to competitions.
Criminal Record Check:A criminal record check is required, with costs reimbursed.
Additional Information:This opportunity is suitable for individuals fulfilling volunteer hours for academic credit. Volunteer Manitoba will provide a letter of reference, supervision, and training/orientation.
