The Head of Global Humanitarian Initiatives is tasked with delivering vision, leadership, and strategic oversight to the Canadian Partnership for Women and Children's humanitarian efforts. This role is pivotal in ensuring that our initiatives are of superior quality, timely, and impactful, particularly focusing on marginalized communities affected by crises.

This position will manage the daily operations of the humanitarian initiatives and serve as the primary liaison for collaborations with various stakeholders. The role includes supervising and mentoring staff and volunteers, ensuring program excellence through effective project planning, design, and execution. Additionally, it is crucial to ensure that resources are utilized efficiently and in partnership with local communities.

The Head will enhance the organization's disaster response capabilities by collaborating with staff, regional teams, and local partners to formulate and implement strategies that position the organization as a leader in humanitarian response and recovery. This position is integral to maintaining a high standard of professionalism and quality in our humanitarian efforts.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Strategic Leadership and Program Oversight

  • Provide strategic direction and planning for the design and execution of humanitarian initiatives, contributing to the overall impact goals of the organization.
  • Collaborate with senior leadership to determine responses to emerging humanitarian crises and manage the operational processes involved in these responses.
  • Lead and oversee the programming portfolio, ensuring effective design, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation of projects with stakeholder input.
  • Ensure alignment with the organization's standards and requirements as well as those of institutional funding agencies.
  • Manage the budget and financial resources for humanitarian initiatives, ensuring optimal use to maximize impact.
  • Foster effective communication and collaboration among staff, field teams, and external partners to enhance program quality.
  • Uphold best practices in humanitarian principles and ensure regular evaluations of program effectiveness.
  • Lead a global team dedicated to humanitarian initiatives, aligning with the organization's values and culture.
  • Support the professional development of team members through established work plans and a culture of continuous learning.
  • Oversee data collection and reporting systems to ensure compliance with donor standards and organizational policies.

Coordination and Networking

  • Develop and implement strategies for engagement with key government and institutional donors.
  • Support fundraising efforts to secure resources for humanitarian initiatives.
  • Build and maintain relationships with relevant humanitarian networks and local organizations.
  • Represent the organization in key humanitarian forums and working groups as necessary.

Resource Development and Mobilization

  • Collaborate with fundraising teams to initiate donor appeals and campaigns.
  • Educate stakeholders about humanitarian needs and initiatives.
  • Expand and diversify the organization's funding portfolio for humanitarian responses.

Other Responsibilities

  • Ensure that humanitarian initiatives are responsive to the evolving global context and utilize evidence-based approaches.
  • Develop tools and guidelines to enhance disaster management capacity among staff and partners.
  • Promote accountability and adherence to key humanitarian standards and commitments.
  • Ensure that staff receive necessary training and support for their roles in humanitarian initiatives.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

This position is responsible for supervising all staff and volunteers involved in humanitarian initiatives, fostering a high-performance culture through effective leadership and support.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A commitment to the organization's mission and values.
  • Extensive experience in humanitarian response design and management, with a minimum of 10 years in the field.
  • Strong understanding of humanitarian work, particularly in high-need regions.
  • Proven ability to lead diverse teams and coordinate complex strategies.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Willingness to travel extensively, including to high-risk areas.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • A Master's degree in a relevant field is preferred.
  • Significant experience in humanitarian assistance and organizational consultation in cross-cultural settings.

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

  • Fluency in English is required; proficiency in additional languages is an asset.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

The role requires travel to various locations, including challenging environments, which may pose physical and mental demands.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

The work environment may involve exposure to high-stress situations typical of humanitarian response efforts.
