Laboratory Analyst Position

Oil Sands Laboratory – Kearl

Location: Fort McMurray, Alberta

The laboratory operates on a client site situated north of Fort McMurray. This role demands prompt and precise turnaround times to assist the client in monitoring their operational parameters for optimal production.

Overview of Responsibilities:

Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Independently operate a variety of analytical instruments including Gas Chromatographs, Viscometers, Digital Density Meters, Dean Stark apparatus, and particle size analyzers for petroleum operations.
  • Conduct sample preparation processes.
  • Adhere to Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
  • Provide high-quality analytical data in a timely manner.
  • Efficiently manage glassware and equipment for extractions, refluxes, and preparations.
  • Maintain calibration, quality control records, and perform routine maintenance.
  • Implement daily troubleshooting methods for analytical equipment.
  • Ensure compliance with Bureau Veritas's policies, certifications, and accreditations.
  • Actively engage in Bureau Veritas's Health and Safety Program, including meetings, near-miss reporting, and hazard assessments.

Ideal Candidate Profile:

  • Post-Secondary Diploma or Degree in a relevant field (e.g., BS, Petroleum/Chemical Technician).
  • Proven experience in a Laboratory Technician or Analyst role is advantageous.
  • Strong understanding of sample handling procedures to maintain sample integrity through compliance with laboratory protocols and quality assurance measures.
  • Familiarity with laboratory Occupational Health and Safety practices for handling hazardous materials safely.
  • Excellent manual dexterity, record-keeping, calculation, and problem-solving skills.
  • Adaptability to perform diverse tasks in response to changing priorities.
  • Strong time-management, communication, multitasking, and prioritization abilities.
  • Proficient computer skills.
  • Positive attitude with the ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively within a team.

Experience Requirements:

  • Minimum Education: Diploma in a relevant field (Required).
  • 1-2 years of experience in a related field (Preferred).

Work Schedule:

  • Shift work - 12-hour shifts.
  • Shift rotation: 14 days of day shifts followed by 14 days off; alternating with 14 days of night shifts followed by 14 days off.
  • Local applicants: Transportation to/from site provided and camp accommodations available.
  • Applicants from other regions may qualify for a fly-in/fly-out schedule with camp accommodations.
