Job Overview

The Hamilton Spectator is seeking a passionate and skilled full-time News Writer who excels in crafting narratives for both online and print mediums. The ideal candidate will be a proactive individual capable of delivering a diverse array of stories on significant and engaging subjects pertinent to our audience.

Compensation: Salary Range $51,365.83 to $74,265.12


Key Responsibilities:
  • Collaborating with the local news editor to consistently generate captivating and relevant news stories presented in both conventional and innovative formats.
  • Delivering high-quality, credible journalism through exceptional reporting and research abilities, including proficiency in data interpretation.
  • Creating engaging multimedia content for our website and social media platforms, encompassing video and audio segments.
  • Traveling within the community to document events and gather information outside of standard working hours, including evenings and weekends.
Qualifications:
  • Degree or Diploma in Journalism or a related discipline.
  • Self-motivated with the capacity to apply sound news judgment.
  • Proficient in utilizing social media and adept at online content posting.
  • Excellent communication skills, particularly in written form (Canadian Press Style).
  • Strong organizational abilities, with a knack for managing time and prioritizing tasks effectively.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, deadline-oriented, digital-first environment.
  • A collaborative team player who can foster professional relationships with colleagues.
  • Experience in data analysis, mapping, photography, video production, and broadcasting is advantageous.
  • Must possess access to a reliable vehicle and a valid driver's license.
