We are seeking a highly skilled Duty Counsel Lawyer to join our team at Legal Aid Alberta. As a Duty Counsel Lawyer, you will play a critical role in providing legal representation to clients in adult and youth criminal courts.
Key Responsibilities- Represent clients in adult and youth criminal courts to the highest professional standards.
- Travel to attend various circuit courts as required.
- Interview clients, assess their needs, and provide them with expert advice on their legal options.
- Negotiate release conditions and/or plea arrangements with Crown counsel on behalf of clients.
- Review and provide legal opinions and summaries in relation to service eligibility for summary offences.
- Maintain accurate and complete statistical records.
- Comply with office policies and procedures.
- Participate in performance and staff meetings as required.
- Law degree from a recognized law school.
- Active membership in good standing with the Law Society of Alberta or eligibility for immediate membership.
- At least 5 years of experience in adult and youth criminal law practice.
- Thorough understanding of the Criminal Code, including bail and sentencing provisions.
- Knowledge of the Youth Criminal Justice Act and the Protection Against Family Violence Act.
- Excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to communicate effectively with clients and other stakeholders.
- Ability to build rapport and negotiate effectively with Crown Counsel.
- Strong advocacy, problem-solving, and conflict resolution skills.
- Proficiency in MS Office, including Outlook, Word, and SharePoint.
- Ability to work with clients who have complex needs, including physical or mental disability, substance abuse, or living situations that impede their ability to resolve legal matters.
