Position Overview: The Mental Health Registered Nurse (RN) plays a crucial role in the Emergency Department, providing care to children and youth facing a variety of mental health challenges.
Organization: PHSA
Location: Vancouver, BC
Incentive: This position may qualify for a one-time recruitment incentive, subject to funding availability.
Key Responsibilities:
- Deliver direct healthcare services to children and adolescents with diverse mental health issues, conducting thorough physical and psychosocial assessments.
- Collaborate with physicians and allied health professionals to administer prescribed treatments and medications in accordance with established policies.
- Monitor and document patient progress, symptoms, and behavioral changes, utilizing a range of healthcare interventions and nursing skills.
- Assess patient needs during the intake process and develop care plans in collaboration with the emergency team.
- Provide crisis counseling and support to patients and their families, facilitating referrals to community resources as necessary.
- Assist in the admission and transfer processes to inpatient units, ensuring smooth transitions for patients and their families.
- Contribute to the development of educational materials for health teaching aimed at patients and families.
Qualifications:
- Current registration as a Registered Nurse or Registered Psychiatric Nurse with the British Columbia College of Nurses & Midwives (BCCNM).
- A minimum of three years of recent experience in child and adolescent mental health, including crisis or emergency settings.
- Current CPR and CPI training certifications.
Skills and Competencies:
- In-depth knowledge of emergency triage, mental health assessment, and crisis intervention techniques.
- Effective communication skills, both verbal and written.
- Ability to make informed decisions independently and collaboratively in clinical settings.
- Strong rapport-building skills with children, adolescents, and their families in crisis situations.
- Commitment to ongoing learning and understanding of Indigenous cultural safety and reconciliation efforts.
