Vision Loss Rehabilitation Canada is a distinguished health services organization dedicated to supporting individuals who are blind or partially sighted throughout the nation.

Our certified professionals offer training that empowers clients to enhance or regain their daily living skills, fostering independence and improving safety and mobility.

We collaborate closely with ophthalmologists, optometrists, and other healthcare practitioners, delivering essential services on a referral basis in various settings, including homes and community environments.

Position Title: Specialist in Assistive Technology

Employment Type: Full-time, Permanent

Reporting To: Senior Manager of Healthcare Operations & Specialized Programs

This role involves assessing, recommending, and demonstrating assistive technology solutions tailored for individuals experiencing vision loss. You will assist in the development, implementation, and instruction of training related to assistive software.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Evaluating individuals with sight loss to identify their specific needs regarding assistive technology.
  • Collaborating with clients to recommend suitable assistive technology and training solutions that cater to their unique requirements.
  • Supporting clients in implementing assistive technology recommendations, including acquisition, setup, and configuration of devices.
  • Performing administrative tasks such as service tracking, benchmarking, and report writing.
  • Delivering seminars and workshops on assistive technology to community organizations and groups.
  • Demonstrating assistive technology options to both internal and external audiences.
  • Promoting awareness and understanding of assistive technology through consultations and public education.
  • Assisting in the training and supervision of volunteers and students.

Problem Solving and Impact:

Provide timely assessments to help individuals determine the most suitable assistive technology for their goals. Support clients in utilizing assistive technology and resolving related challenges.

Utilize established procedures to work with clients in identifying appropriate assistive technology solutions. Stay informed about advancements in assistive technology related to vision loss and engage in professional development activities to remain current in the field.

Provide leadership to community groups by educating and advocating for awareness regarding vision loss. Mentor and coach volunteers, students, and staff.

Qualifications:

  • General understanding of various disabilities and their impact on assistive technology selection and instruction.
  • Experience in a technology-driven environment, utilizing both standard office software and specialized client management technology.
  • Knowledge and experience with access and assistive technology.
  • Relevant work experience, along with a college diploma or university degree in technology.
  • Completion of courses or certification in teaching and training.
  • Extensive knowledge of assistive technology for blindness and low vision.
  • Proficiency in relevant computer applications.
  • Bilingualism in French and English is an asset.
  • Flexibility to work varied hours and willingness to travel as needed.
