Position Overview

This is a non-union contract role requiring a commitment of 35 hours per week.

Key Responsibilities

As a Settlement Support Specialist, you will:

  • Conduct comprehensive intake and assessment to identify needs, barriers, and strengths in creating personalized settlement plans for asylum seekers and newcomers.
  • Utilize a Case Management approach to provide clients with essential information, referrals, documentation assistance, crisis intervention, follow-up, and supportive counseling services.
  • Facilitate connections to community and social service organizations for additional client support.
  • Collaborate with government entities, community organizations, educational institutions, and volunteers to enhance service delivery.
  • Maintain accurate administrative records of services provided and activities undertaken, preparing necessary reports and managing data entry using COSTI's database.
Work Requirements

Flexibility is essential, as the role requires availability at various COSTI locations, including evenings and weekends as needed.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will possess:

  • A Social Service Worker Diploma or equivalent, complemented by relevant practical experience.
  • A minimum of one year of experience in providing settlement counseling.
  • Expertise in assisting clients with both short-term and long-term goal identification and settlement plan development.
  • Knowledge in areas such as immigration processes, basic needs (food, shelter, banking), employment, financial management, childcare, housing subsidies, crisis intervention, income support, and education.
  • Experience in delivering services to asylum seekers, including assistance with work permit applications and access to legal aid.
Skills and Competencies

Successful candidates will demonstrate:

  • Sensitivity to the unique needs of asylum seekers and an understanding of the socio-economic trends affecting immigrants.
  • Proficiency in completing immigration and various government application forms.
  • Fluency in additional languages such as Spanish, Farsi, Swahili, Luganda, or Yoruba is preferred.
  • Strong customer service skills and the ability to effectively liaise with community organizations.
  • Experience with virtual communication platforms (e.g., Zoom, Microsoft Teams, GoToMeetings).
  • Solid knowledge of Internet, Email, and MS Office applications in a Windows environment.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.
