Job Summary:
We are seeking a highly motivated and dedicated Education Support Specialist to join our team at School District #62 (Sooke). The successful candidate will provide support to students with diverse needs, including those with autism, behavior disorders, and learning disabilities.
Key Responsibilities:- Support students in a variety of classroom settings, including those with autism and behavior disorders.
- Implement adapted and modified curriculum, as needed.
- Prepare visual supports and implement low-tech communication systems.
- Implement augmentative and alternative communication systems.
- Assist students with daily living skills, including feeding, dressing, toileting, and mobility.
- Support students with physical needs, including glucagon testing and transfers.
- Monitor and report student behavior, as required.
- Attend to minor cuts and bruises, and refer students to first aid attendants as needed.
- Support students with transferring on and off buses.
- Remain current in school, district, and provincial policies and guidelines relevant to the role.
- Secondary school graduation or equivalent.
- Education Assistant Certification or equivalent in a related field.
- Minimum three (3) months of experience working with children.
- Knowledge and understanding of child development.
- Familiarity with Individual Education Plans and Individual Care Plans, an asset.
- Ability to implement modified and adapted curriculum.
- Basic computer skills, including reading and sending emails, viewing Word and Excel documents, navigating the internet, and using web-based applications.
- Physical ability to respond to student needs, including bolting.
- Demonstrates patience and acceptance when dealing with students.
- Shows kindness and cares about the well-being of students.
- Actively shows courtesy and respect to all, proactively builds healthy and trusting relationships with all, and contributes to a positive working environment.
- Clearly articulates thoughts and ideas and shares timely and relevant information openly, honestly, and respectfully using oral, written, and visual formats.
- Possesses strong organizational skills and proactively plans, prioritizes, and organizes work.
- Respects the confidential nature of all information relating to students, parents, and staff.
The successful candidate will work in a variety of classroom settings, including those with students with autism and behavior disorders. The candidate will be required to physically support students, including lifting and transferring, and may be required to support students with transferring on and off buses.
The candidate will be expected to remain current in school, district, and provincial policies and guidelines relevant to the role.
