Position Title: Specialist, Orientation & Mobility

Location: Winnipeg, Manitoba

Term: Full-time, Contract (1 Year)

Reports To: Regional Manager, Healthcare Operations

Salary: $27.37/hour

I. Overview of Responsibilities

This role encompasses a variety of tasks aimed at instructing individuals with vision loss in orientation and mobility, facilitating the development of essential travel skills and spatial awareness necessary for independent navigation.

II. Key Responsibilities

The following duties are integral to this position:

  1. Conduct thorough assessments to identify the orientation and mobility needs and personal objectives of clients with vision loss.
  2. Collaborate with clients to establish and prioritize goals, crafting a tailored orientation and mobility service plan.
  3. Instruct on concept development, spatial awareness, sensory skills, cane techniques, and safe travel practices.
  4. Support clients in developing assertiveness and advocacy skills related to their mobility.
  5. Provide guidance on the use of electronic travel aids and create tactile maps as needed.
  6. Educate family members and caregivers on sighted guiding techniques.
  7. Act as a resource for information on guide dog training and collaborate with guide dog schools.
  8. Advise on accessible design and environmental considerations.
  9. Maintain accurate case documentation in accordance with VLRC protocols.
  10. Handle administrative tasks such as service tracking and report generation.
  11. Perform additional duties as assigned.

III. Relationship Management

  1. Establish and nurture connections with community rehabilitation teams, agencies, educational institutions, and stakeholders.
  2. Offer support and guidance to clients and their families in adjusting to vision loss.
  3. Participate in interdisciplinary team meetings to enhance service delivery.
  4. Promote awareness of vision health issues through public education and training initiatives.
  5. Assist in the training and supervision of volunteers and students.

IV. Problem Solving

Deliver timely orientation and mobility lessons, ensuring clients acquire the necessary skills for independent travel. Demonstrate creativity and adaptability in addressing unique client needs.

V. Decision-Making Authority

Utilize established procedures to develop individualized programs for clients, exercising judgment to determine when referrals to additional services are necessary.

VI. Leadership Responsibilities

Stay informed about advancements in electronic travel aids and orientation and mobility techniques. Provide leadership and mentorship to community groups, advocating for awareness of vision loss issues. Support the training and development of staff and volunteers.

VII. Qualifications

Knowledge and Skills:

  1. Experience working with individuals with vision impairments.
  2. Understanding of disabilities across all age groups.
  3. Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  4. Ability to make informed decisions and solve problems effectively.
  5. Professional demeanor and self-motivation.
  6. Detail-oriented and organized.
  7. Commitment to a client-centered approach.
  8. Adherence to healthcare documentation standards.

Experience and Education:

  1. Graduate of the Instructor for Blind and Visually Impaired Program or equivalent.
  2. ACVREP Certified Orientation & Mobility Specialist (COMS) certification.
  3. Proficiency in relevant computer applications.
  4. Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Work Environment:

  1. Services will be delivered in various settings, including offices and community locations.
  2. Flexibility in working hours is required.
  3. Travel may be necessary.
