Job Title: Orientation and Mobility Specialist

Company: Vision Loss Rehabilitation Canada (VLRC)

Overview: We are seeking an Orientation and Mobility Specialist to join our team at VLRC. The successful candidate will be responsible for instructing individuals with vision loss on orientation and mobility skills to enhance their independent travel abilities.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Assess and document O&M needs and personal goals of individuals with vision loss.
  • Develop orientation & mobility service plans with individuals.
  • Teach concept development, spatial awareness, cane techniques, and travel skills.
  • Provide support in assertiveness/advocacy skills related to O&M.
  • Offer guidance on electronic travel aids usage and tactile maps.
  • Teach sighted guide techniques and work with guide dog schools.
  • Act as a resource on accessible design and built environment matters.
  • Maintain case data and perform administrative duties.

Qualifications:

  • Experience with individuals with vision loss.
  • Knowledge of disabilities across all life stages.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Problem-solving ability and professional attitude.
  • Client-centered approach and commitment.

Requirements:

  • Graduate of relevant program or equivalent education.
  • ACVREP Certified Orientation & Mobility Specialist.
  • Proficiency in relevant computer applications.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Work Environment:

  • Services provided in various settings including office centers, homes, and community.
  • Flexibility to work varied hours and travel when required.
