About the Role

Canadian Blood Services is seeking a skilled Nurse Specialist Cord Blood to join our dynamic Medical Laboratory & Stem Cell Services team.

The Medical Laboratory & Stem Cell Services team plays a critical role in supporting Canadian Blood Services by operating several programs that promote better outcomes for patients living with various diseases and disorders that can be treated with stem cell transplants.

Key Responsibilities
  • Collaborate with Cord Blood Bank staff to ensure a continuous quality improvement environment, adhering to regulatory and accreditation standards, and customer satisfaction.
  • Conduct maternal interviews and assess responses to questions to evaluate donor suitability for cord blood donation, including informed consent, medical history/health assessment questionnaire, hospital medical chart review, and phlebotomy to obtain maternal blood samples.
  • Perform ex-utero umbilical cord blood collection as required.
  • Provide training, support, and mentorship to the cord blood bank team and hospital customers.
Requirements
  • Baccalaureate degree in Nursing from a recognized registered nursing program, with a minimum of three to six years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Licensed to practice as a Registered nurse in the province of employment.
  • Knowledge of adult learning principles, developed skills in design, instruction, or facilitation, and experience in Obstetrical Nursing and/or Labour and Delivery are preferred.
  • Venepuncture experience is mandatory.
  • The ability to exercise judgment, tact, diplomacy, and strict confidentiality is essential.

Work Environment
  • Shifts are scheduled between Monday to Friday, 7am to 3pm, including all statutory holidays that fall on weekdays.
  • Bi-weekly hours: 37.5.
  • Location: Brampton Civic Hospital. Occasional travel required to Canadian Blood Services office in Brampton.
  • Physical requirements: ability to lift weight up to 10 kg (22 lbs.).
