Pediatric Emergency Registered Nurse (RN)

As a dedicated RN, you understand that nursing is more than just a profession; it is a vocation that calls for passion and commitment. You thrive in dynamic environments where each day presents new challenges and opportunities. Your motivation stems from a desire to positively impact the lives of children, establishing quick and compassionate connections with young patients and their families. Continuous learning is integral to your practice, as you seek both experiential and educational growth.

Key Responsibilities

In the BC Children's Hospital (BCCH) Emergency Department (ED), RNs play a crucial role as part of a collaborative healthcare team. The RN is accountable for delivering exceptional care to pediatric patients, which includes emergency interventions for resuscitation and stabilization, as well as trauma nursing. The ED embraces a Family-Centered Care philosophy, catering to the needs of pediatric and adolescent patients and their families. Typical responsibilities include:

  • Conducting comprehensive nursing assessments, establishing nursing diagnoses, and implementing care plans for patients with real or potential health issues.
  • Executing triage and prioritization of patients using advanced pediatric assessment techniques in accordance with established guidelines.
  • Maintaining meticulous and timely documentation of relevant health information, nursing assessments, interventions, and communications in patient records.
  • Educating patients and families, providing discharge instructions, and promoting health awareness while facilitating appropriate follow-up care.
  • Delivering nursing care to diverse patient populations in crisis situations, including those facing physical and sexual abuse, psychiatric challenges, and substance-related issues.

Qualifications

To be considered for this role, candidates must possess:

  • Graduation from an accredited Nursing Program and current registration as a Registered Nurse with the British Columbia College of Nurses & Midwives (BCCNM).
  • At least one year of recent clinical experience in pediatrics or an Emergency Department setting.
  • Preferred certifications in Emergency Nursing Pediatric Course (ENPC), Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), or Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC).

Skills and Attributes

The ideal candidate will demonstrate:

  • Proficient verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to effectively engage with children and their families.
  • Capability to function as a collaborative member of a multidisciplinary care team and serve as a nursing resource.
  • A commitment to understanding and applying the principles of the Truth & Reconciliation Commission's 94 Calls to Action and related initiatives.
  • Awareness of the socio-economic and historical contexts affecting Indigenous communities, along with knowledge of Indigenous Cultural Safety and anti-racism principles.
