Rupertsland Institute (RLI) operates as a key affiliate of the Métis Nation of Alberta, focusing on a comprehensive mandate encompassing education, training, and research. With a broad network of METI-Service Centres and a Corporate Head Office, RLI is dedicated to delivering educational and training services to a significant population of Alberta Métis.

Key Responsibilities

Rupertsland Institute is in search of a Senior Director of Finance and Corporate Services (F&CS). Reporting directly to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO), the Senior Director of F&CS will be tasked with ensuring compliance with Canadian Accounting Standards for Not-for-Profit Organizations (ASNPO) while optimizing the accuracy and efficiency of RLI's financial, human resources, payroll, information technology, reception, and corporate administrative functions. The Senior Director will work collaboratively with both internal and external stakeholders to develop and present the budget for the CEO's review and will engage with the Board of Governors Finance Committee as necessary.

Core Duties

Financial Management:

  • Establish and monitor key performance indicators to assess financial performance and operational efficiency.
  • Initiate and manage financial sustainability projects to secure the organization's long-term financial viability.
  • Oversee the planning, coordination, and execution of the Finance Annual Workplan.
  • Ensure that expenditures align with federal and provincial funding agreements and the Annual Operating Plan (AOP).
  • Implement and supervise internal controls to guarantee compliance with legal, regulatory, and organizational policies.
  • Prepare and present draft expenditure plans for CEO approval.
  • Generate financial reports, including income statements and balance sheets, for CEO review and Board approval.
  • Facilitate financial transactions for the Métis Education Foundation and other agreements as directed.
  • Provide necessary documentation for the annual financial audit and ensure compliance with audit requirements.
  • Guarantee timely and accurate remittances, payments, and reconciliations.
  • Review and approve monthly bank reconciliations and payroll processes.
  • Address issues related to payables, receivables, and general ledgers promptly.
  • Maintain and update process documentation and financial modules.
  • Advise the CEO on financial risks impacting RLI.

Corporate Services Management:

  • Lead the planning and execution of Corporate Services initiatives.
  • Oversee the annual review and upgrades of IT systems and databases, providing recommendations as needed.
  • Manage office leases and insurance matters for RLI.
  • Collaborate with the Senior Management Team (SMT) on data governance, ensuring compliance with relevant legislation.
  • Build relationships with corporate services stakeholders to enhance data integrity and security.
  • Regularly meet with IT stakeholders to address concerns and review action items.
  • Coordinate logistical needs for IT and office equipment.
  • Negotiate and approve service and asset purchase quotes.
  • Work with the Communications Manager to develop effective internal and external communication strategies.
  • Oversee corporate communications, ensuring consistency in messaging and branding.
  • Collaborate with the Marketing and Communications team to promote RLI's initiatives.
  • Support the HR Manager in developing HR strategies and programs.
  • Encourage a workplace culture that values transparency, fairness, and employee engagement.
  • Ensure compliance with HR and Occupational Health and Safety policies.

General Leadership:

  • Provide guidance to the Finance and Corporate Services team through training and mentorship.
  • Analyze departmental operations and implement improvements as necessary.
  • Prepare various correspondence, including reports and memos.
  • Engage in professional development activities.
  • Travel as required for organizational needs.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Post-Secondary Degree in Finance, Accounting, or Business Administration.
  • CPA Designation is mandatory.
  • 7-10 years of relevant experience in accounting and administration.
  • 5 years of experience in IT/project management/corporate services.
  • 7 years of experience in a leadership role.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of corporate accounts and financial management, particularly ASNPO.
  • Familiarity with IT systems and software.
  • Understanding of employment legislation and Occupational Health and Safety regulations.
  • Experience in Indigenous or not-for-profit organizations is an asset.
  • Knowledge of Métis history and cultural issues.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple projects effectively.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills for collaboration with diverse teams.
  • Strong leadership capabilities to mentor and develop staff.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Analytical thinking and problem-solving skills.
  • High ethical standards and discretion in handling sensitive information.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, complex environment.
  • Proficient in SAGE300 or similar accounting systems and Microsoft Suite.
