POSITION OVERVIEW

Under the supervision of the Manager of Tenant Engagement, the Community Engagement Specialist is tasked with fostering trust, respect, and social connections among residents in properties managed by BC Housing. This role is pivotal in cultivating resilient communities that are equipped to handle extreme weather conditions. The Specialist will focus on enhancing tenant participation, nurturing positive interactions among residents, and establishing connections with resources in the wider community. The ultimate aim is to develop and execute sustainable, inclusive, and impactful housing initiatives that tackle housing issues and elevate the quality of life for individuals, families, and communities.

The Community Engagement Specialist plays an essential role in ensuring the safety and well-being of residents. The incumbent is responsible for promoting community involvement and forging partnerships to create resilient neighborhoods by guaranteeing that tenants have the necessary resources, access, and support to navigate unforeseen challenges.

CANDIDATE QUALIFICATIONS

The ideal candidate will possess the following:

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

A Bachelor's degree or diploma in social sciences, community development, community mental health, recreational therapy, or a related field. Significant progressive experience in planning, implementing, and managing community development and volunteer initiatives that cater to vulnerable tenants. Some background in psychosocial program planning for diverse populations facing multiple barriers to stable housing. Proven experience collaborating with diverse tenant groups and community agencies to establish partnerships that provide a variety of services and support to vulnerable individuals and respond to community needs. Alternatively, an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience acceptable to the employer.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

Comprehensive knowledge of affordable housing policies, programs, and planning practices, as well as community development and housing management. In-depth understanding of current social issues such as homelessness, mental health challenges, substance abuse, and the effects of extreme weather on vulnerable populations. Familiarity with community engagement strategies; general awareness of community organizations, the services they offer, and methods of access. Strong analytical, problem-solving, and time management abilities. Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including public speaking, presentations, and workshop facilitation. Proficient negotiation, mediation, and conflict resolution skills. Competent in using computer applications and software, including MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook. Ability to learn and comprehend BC Housing programs, policies, and operational frameworks. Capability to build relationships, work independently, manage multiple tasks, and adapt to changing priorities in a dynamic environment. Proficiency in summarizing and explaining complex program information. Skill in organizing and administering programs for a diverse population. Ability to collaborate effectively across organizational departments, within a team, and in partnership contexts. Capacity to exercise a high level of discretion in establishing supportive, confidential, and trusting relationships with tenants facing multiple challenges. Willingness to travel and work occasional evenings and weekends; transportation arrangements must meet the operational requirements of the position. A valid Class 5 BC driver's license and access to a vehicle are required.
