Open Learning Faculty Members are integral teaching personnel within the Open Learning division of Thompson Rivers University. Their primary responsibility is to foster, support, and direct students towards achieving success in their academic pursuits. Candidates for this role must possess exceptional teaching skills, a thorough understanding of the subject matter, and a positive, approachable demeanor in all student interactions.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIESResponsibilities of the Open Learning Faculty Member include, but are not limited to:
- Setting up administrative tasks and maintaining accurate records
- Establishing and sustaining regular communication with students as outlined in the collective agreement
- Addressing all student inquiries via appropriate channels within the specified time frames
- Evaluating assignments, posting results, and providing timely feedback
- Grading examinations and recording outcomes
The anticipated number of students enrolled in this course is variable and subject to change based on actual enrollment figures.
QUALIFICATIONSWe seek candidates who hold a PhD in a relevant field, possess substantial recent academic experience in the subject area, and have a proven track record of assisting students in reaching their objectives. In addition to outstanding verbal and written communication skills, preferred candidates will demonstrate proficiency in distance education methodologies. Familiarity with contemporary educational technologies, tools, and Learning Management Systems is advantageous.
The ideal Open Learning Faculty Member will:
- Exhibit expertise and experience in the course subject matter
- Have received training or possess successful experience in facilitating learning within a collaborative online environment
- Have hands-on experience with current educational technologies, tools, and Learning Management Systems
- Demonstrate knowledge of effective teaching strategies utilizing modern educational technology and tools
- Show proficiency in delivering flexible learning materials and applying instructional technology, along with adult learning principles
Compensation for Open Learning Faculty Members varies based on multiple factors, including student enrollment, the nature of the work, course type, and the number of assessments completed by students. The overall remuneration includes hourly rates and fixed amounts for specific tasks. For detailed information, please refer to the relevant collective agreement.
