The University of Saskatchewan is excited to announce an opportunity for a Tier 2 Canada Research Chair in the field of Zoonotic Virus and Animal Reservoirs. This position is part of a national initiative aimed at positioning Canada as a leader in research and innovation.
Primary Objective: We are in search of a distinguished emerging researcher who will spearhead a cutting-edge research initiative centered on zoonotic viruses and their interactions (evolution, susceptibility, and host response) within animal reservoirs. The successful candidate will develop innovative research methodologies and enhance our understanding of viral biology and host interactions in zoonotic contexts. This research is anticipated to shed light on novel defense mechanisms and contribute to the formulation of new strategies for controlling emerging viral pathogens. The appointed individual will benefit from substantial start-up resources and a competitive salary aligned with leading academic roles in Canada.
Nature of Work: The University of Saskatchewan is home to a prestigious research investment program dedicated to addressing challenges at the intersection of animal, human, and environmental health. The Vaccine and Infectious Disease Organization (VIDO), recognized as Canada's Centre for Pandemic Research, excels in infectious disease research and vaccine innovation for both humans and animals. VIDO boasts one of the largest and most sophisticated containment level 3 facilities globally and is in the process of expanding its infrastructure to include containment level 4 capabilities, a GMP vaccine production facility, and an advanced animal housing complex that accommodates a diverse range of animal models, including wildlife. Our vision encompasses the capacity to investigate any emerging disease across various animal models, adopting a One Health approach to mitigate the risks associated with emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases affecting both humans and animals.
Typical Responsibilities:
Tier 2 Chairs are designated for outstanding emerging scholars, typically within a decade of obtaining their degree. Candidates who are more than ten years post-degree may still qualify if their career trajectory has been affected by parental leave, extended health issues, or other training experiences. The impact of any career interruptions will be thoroughly evaluated during the assessment of the candidate's research accomplishments.
