Maintenance Technician for Waste and Recycling Facilities

Job Overview

The Waste and Environment Department is seeking qualified candidates for the permanent role of Maintenance Technician at the Waste and Recycling Centre.

Position Summary:

The Maintenance Technician will deliver technical maintenance support for the Waste and Recycling Centre, which encompasses the Materials Recycling Facility (MRF) and the Organics Processing Facility (OPF). The primary responsibility will be the upkeep of waste processing machinery. This position reports directly to the Processing Manager.

Compensation: $51.35 per hour

Employment Type: Full Time, 40 hours per week, Monday to Friday, with potential evening and weekend shifts as necessary.

Key Responsibilities:
  1. Oversee daily planning and execution of corrective, preventative, and predictive maintenance tasks at MRF, OPF, and other areas within the Waste and Recycling Centre as required.
  2. Diagnose, disassemble, inspect, reassemble, and repair mechanical and electrical systems in accordance with facility documentation, engineering drawings, operational manuals, and schematics.
  3. Monitor the MRF process via the SCADA system and implement maintenance actions based on alarms and diagnostics.
  4. Ensure availability of critical operations and maintenance spare parts, and possess the expertise to install them safely and efficiently; optimize spare parts inventory.
  5. Coordinate third-party maintenance services for City-owned equipment, including supervising major repairs and overhauls according to established priorities.
  6. Communicate maintenance performance metrics such as downtime, costs, and root causes with operations contractors and City supervisors as necessary.
  7. Establish relationships with equipment manufacturers, suppliers, and operational staff, and manage purchase requisitions as needed.
  8. Assist in the development and implementation of new projects, process enhancements, and maintenance policies.
  9. Maintain a safe and clean work environment by adhering to all safety protocols, including the proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
Qualifications:
  1. Red Seal Journeyman Electrician certification.
  2. Red Seal Journeyman Millwright certification or demonstrated mechanical proficiency with the ability to obtain certification.
  3. Minimum of 5 years' experience in a maintenance role within a plant environment.
  4. Valid Class 5 driver's license.
  5. Knowledge of instrumentation and control systems, including PLCs and SCADA.
  6. Familiarity with relevant regulations, standards, and codes.
  7. Ability to interpret complex diagrams and schematics, including:
    • Process and instrumentation diagrams
    • Electrical single line diagrams
    • Hydraulic diagrams
    • General assembly and parts diagrams
  8. Proficiency in MS Office, spreadsheets, computerized asset management systems, and data entry.
  9. Ability to foster positive relationships with contractors and team members.
  10. Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  11. Experience with hoists and trolley systems.
  12. Capability to perform physical tasks, including lifting up to 50 lbs, bending, kneeling, climbing, and crawling, with or without reasonable accommodation.
  13. Willingness to work at heights (4 feet and above).
  14. Ability to work in various indoor and outdoor conditions, including exposure to heat, cold, dust, and noise, while utilizing PPE.
  15. Willingness to obtain necessary certifications, including but not limited to:
    • Aerial lifts and platforms
    • Fall protection
    • Confined space entry
    • H2S alive
    • Respiratory protective equipment.
