Job Brief

The Waste and Environment Department is inviting applications for the permanent position of Waste and Recycling Centre Maintenance Technician.

The Opportunity:

The Technician is to provide technical maintenance expertise to the Waste and Recycling Centre including the Materials Recycling Facility (MRF) and Organics Processing Facility (OPF). The focus of the position will be maintenance of waste processing equipment. They will report directly to the Processing Manager at the Waste & Recycling Centre.

Wage: $51.35 per hour

Status: Full Time at 40 hours, Monday – Friday with as required evening/weekend shifts

Specific Responsibilities Include:
  1. Responsible for the day-to-day planning and “hands-on” completion of corrective, preventative, and predictive maintenance activities at MRF, and OPF and to additional areas at the WRC as needed.
  2. Ability to troubleshoot, disassemble, inspect, re-assemble, and conduct repairs or adjustments/modifications on both mechanical and electrical systems according to facility documentation, engineered drawings, sketches, operations and maintenance manuals, verbal instructions, schematics, etc.
  3. Assesses the MRF process from a SCADA system and applies maintenance actions as required based on alarms, diagnostics, etc.
  4. Responsible for ensuring critical operations and maintenance spare parts are available to the facility, and possess the skills and knowledge to install in a safe, professional, and timely manner; ability to optimize the spare parts inventory.
  5. Coordinate 3rd party contract maintenance work for City owned equipment, including the supervision of major equipment repairs, overhauls, and rebuilding as per priority and schedule.
  6. Communicates maintenance performance information such as downtime, cost, and root cause with the operations contractor and City supervisors as required.
  7. Build relationships with equipment manufacturers, suppliers, and operations staff, and conduct purchase requisition as needed.
  8. May assist in the development or execution of new projects/process improvements/maintenance policies.
  9. Ensures the work environment is safe and clean; follows all safety policies, including proper use of PPE and tools/equipment.
We are looking for individuals with the following skills and abilities:
  1. Red Seal Journeyman Electrician ticket.
  2. Red Seal Journeyman Millwright ticket or proven mechanical abilities and ability to obtain one.
  3. More than 5 years’ experience in a plant maintenance environment.
  4. Class 5 driver’s license.
  5. Understanding of instrumentation and controls including PLC’s and SCADA systems.
  6. Understanding of relevant regulations standards and codes.
  7. Ability to comprehend complex diagrams and schematics including but not limited to:
    • Process and instrumentation diagrams
    • Electrical single line diagrams
    • Hydraulic diagrams
    • Equipment general assembly and parts diagrams
  8. Ability to work with MS Office, spreadsheets, computerized asset management programs, and data entry.
  9. Ability to develop and maintain positive relationships with contractors and staff.
  10. Excellent oral and written communications skills.
  11. Knowledge of working with hoists and trolley systems.
  12. Ability to perform physical job duties which may include bending, lifting up to 50lbs, kneeling, climbing, crawling, and twisting safely, with or without a reasonable accommodation.
  13. Ability to work in elevated areas (4 feet and above).
  14. Ability to work in varied indoor and outdoor conditions which may include heat, cold, dust, loud noise, etc., with the use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
  15. Ability to obtain certificates including but not limited to:
    • aerial lifts and platforms
    • fall protection
    • confined space entry
    • H2S alive
    • respiratory protective equipment.
