Job Summary

The Homelessness Outreach Worker plays a vital role in connecting with individuals experiencing homelessness or at risk of becoming homeless in community locations. This position requires a strong understanding of the complexities surrounding homelessness and the ability to navigate housing and related support systems.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain relationships with individuals experiencing homelessness, providing guidance and support to navigate housing and related services.
  • Collaborate with shelters, supportive housing providers, and homelessness service agencies to ensure an integrated system of supports and services.
  • Participate in a multidisciplinary regional homelessness and encampment response team (HEART) to support communities in preventing, minimizing, and resolving encampments.
  • Provide crisis management and de-escalation support to individuals in need.
  • Develop and maintain partnerships with community partners, including advocates, volunteers, local business owners, neighbors, and community members.
  • Stay up-to-date on BC Housing mandate, programs, and services to provide informed support to individuals.

Requirements

  • High School diploma plus completion of post-secondary courses in social housing, community development, mental health, trauma counseling, or a related field.
  • Considerable progressive experience working with individuals experiencing homelessness and poverty due to physical, mental, or psychological disability, and/or substance use challenges.
  • Sound experience in liaising with government, private, and community-based housing providers and working with individuals from diverse socio-economic and cultural backgrounds.
  • Some experience with crisis management and/or de-escalation techniques.
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to empathize with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
  • Proficient in computer applications and software, including MS Office tools.
  • Ability to develop strong partnerships with service providers and community partners.
  • Ability to learn, understand, and update BC Housing mandate, programs, and services.
  • Ability to travel and work periodic evenings and weekends, with reliable transportation arrangements.
