Job Summary:

The Mental Health Counsellor is responsible for promoting student development, student success, and student retention by designing and providing a comprehensive range of psychological and educational services to aid students in achieving improved academic performance, enhanced personal and social effectiveness, and appropriate educational and career plans.

Purpose and Key Functions:
  • Develop and implement effective treatment plans to support students' mental health and well-being.
  • Conduct in-depth assessments and provide counselling and therapy services to students, utilizing evidence-based theoretical models and best practices.
  • Provide assessments of mental health and risk factors, and coordinate referrals with professionals within the Student Wellness Centre and the community.
  • Aid students in identifying and solving emotional and interpersonal problems that may be affecting their academic success, well-being, and bio-psycho-social development.
  • Provide psychological counselling services, including personal counselling, group counselling, and crisis counselling, to support students' mental health and well-being.
  • Interact and assess the level of risk when students present with indications of harm to self or others, or suicidality, and provide appropriate support and referrals.
  • Consult with colleagues and other professionals regarding how to manage difficult or disruptive behaviours, and develop strategies to promote a safe and supportive learning environment.
  • Engage in problem-solving to work through ethical dilemmas, and provide guidance and support to students and colleagues as needed.
  • Facilitate conflict resolution sessions, and provide debriefing to students after a traumatic event.
  • Advocate on behalf of students for special academic consideration, and provide support and guidance to students navigating the university system.
  • Nurture and support students, and encourage them to develop self-care strategies and find a balance between multiple demands.
  • Persuade students to seek appropriate professional help, and support them in attending appointments and following through with treatment plans.
  • Develop and deliver presentations, information, and training sessions to students, faculty, and staff, to promote mental health and well-being.
  • Develop and deliver group counselling and psychotherapy materials, and provide support and guidance to students participating in these programs.
  • Write case notes, including students' history and treatment plans, and maintain confidentiality and adhere to professional standards.
  • Write referral reports to other health professionals, including general practitioners, psychiatrists, and other specialists, to support students' ongoing care and treatment.
  • Plan and coordinate a variety of events and activities to promote mental health and well-being, and review and assess the effectiveness of these initiatives.
  • Maintain and safeguard the confidentiality of student records, and adhere to professional standards and university policies.
  • Participate in professional development activities, and remain current with frequent developments in the field of mental health and counselling.
Supervision:
  • Ensure adherence to quality standards and procedures for short-term staff and volunteers, and provide orientation and training as needed.
Requirements:

A Master's degree in Counselling Psychology, or a related field of study, and 3 years of relevant experience.
