Cultural Liaison for Indigenous Child and Family Services
2 months ago
Your Opportunity:
As the pioneering Indigenous pediatric healthcare initiative in North America, the Awasisak Indigenous Health Program is dedicated to addressing the unique and intricate needs of our patients and their families. The role of the Indigenous Child and Family Engagement Coordinator (EC) has been established to ensure that the voices of diverse Indigenous communities are heard and respected. Acting as a welcoming presence for patients and families within the Awasisak Program, the EC cultivates a culturally safe atmosphere, ensuring that individuals feel comfortable and secure during their time in the healthcare facility.
The EC is tasked with tailoring services to meet the distinct needs of each patient and family, providing support in a compassionate and responsive manner. Key responsibilities include:
- Resource-based interventions and patient advocacy.
- Facilitating introductions and navigation within the healthcare environment.
- Building bridges of understanding and respect between patients, families, and the care team.
In addition, the EC plays a vital role in offering consultation and educational opportunities, collaborating with the care team to ensure culturally safe practices that foster trust in both the Awasisak Program and the broader healthcare system. The EC will have the privilege of connecting families with traditional healing practices and will work closely with the Indigenous Cultural Advisor.
Furthermore, the EC is responsible for establishing and nurturing relationships with a diverse array of First Nations, Métis, and Inuit (FNMI) populations, communities, and organizations. We believe that, with your expertise and support, we can enhance the well-being of Indigenous patients and families together.
Description:
The role involves:
- Conducting basic assessments and implementing resource-based interventions.
- Providing hospitality, problem-solving, advocacy, and spiritual and cultural care to Indigenous children and their families during various life challenges and crises.
- Acting as a bridge-builder within the multidisciplinary team to promote mutual respect and understanding between Indigenous children, their families, and healthcare staff.
- Leading activities and ceremonies that help healthcare professionals embrace Indigenous cultures, fostering healing through the integration of Traditional Indigenous practices within Western healthcare.
- Sharing insights with other programs and services on how to engage with Indigenous peoples in a respectful and compassionate manner.
- Carrying out administrative responsibilities while maintaining respect for sacred boundaries and confidentiality.
Required Qualifications:
Candidates should possess:
- A deep knowledge and respect for the diversity of Indigenous populations and communities.
- The ability to work autonomously as well as collaboratively within a healthcare team.
- Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
- Effective collaboration and communication abilities.
- Proficient written communication skills and familiarity with relevant computer software.
- Experience in networking and relationship-building.
Preferred Qualifications:
It is advantageous to have:
- The ability to communicate in an Indigenous language.
- A solid understanding of Indigenous history, worldviews, perspectives, beliefs, values, cultures, and traditions.
