Job Overview

The Surgical Quality Improvement Reviewer plays a pivotal role in enhancing surgical outcomes at North York General Hospital. This position is integral to the National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (NSQIP), focusing on data integrity and quality enhancement in surgical practices.

Position Responsibilities

  • Data Management and Analysis
  • Identify eligible surgical patients by applying established inclusion and exclusion criteria.
  • Gather comprehensive preoperative, operative, and postoperative data using hospital medical record systems.
  • Participate in departmental meetings to provide updates on data collection and postoperative occurrences.
  • Ensure the reliability of data definitions through Inter-Rater Reliability (IRR) testing.
  • Identify opportunities for streamlining data collection processes.
  • Utilize software tools for effective data collection and analysis.
  • Maintain accurate and timely data entry into the program's database, adhering to established protocols.
  • Conduct thorough chart reviews and assess relevant literature.
  • Participate in database maintenance and ensure data integrity.

Collaboration with Patients and Staff

  • Establish strong working relationships with hospital staff, particularly in Surgery, Medicine, Nursing, and Medical Records.
  • Communicate with patients and families postoperatively to identify any surgical complications.
  • Serve as a resource for internal and external stakeholders regarding the ACS NSQIP.
  • Assist in identifying and resolving issues as they arise.

NSQIP Participation and Training

  • Complete the ACS NSQIP Surgical Clinical Reviewer Training/Certification Program within the initial months of employment.
  • Engage in ongoing training and participate in national conferences.
  • Collaborate with colleagues across the province to share insights and quality improvement strategies.

Qualifications

  • Baccalaureate degree in a health-related field or equivalent experience.
  • Certification as a Surgical Clinical Reviewer or willingness to obtain certification.
  • Minimum of one year of experience in a surgical or clinical research environment.
  • Proficiency in MS Office, particularly Word and Excel.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Familiarity with quality improvement initiatives and regulatory standards in clinical research.

Working Environment

This is a full-time position with day shifts in the Program Management - Surgery Department. North York General Hospital offers a competitive compensation package, including benefits and pension plans.
