Overview

The Engineering Design Assistant plays a vital role within a collaborative team, focusing on the assessment, processing, design, and coordination of permits related to commercial and residential sewer and water connections. This position also provides essential support to applicants navigating the permit submission process.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Manage the intake, evaluation, design, and issuance of sewer and water connection permits.
  2. Conduct engineering calculations, develop preliminary designs, and propose installation solutions for both existing and new service connection projects.
  3. Analyze CCTV and other inspection data to inform design and installation practices for service connections and catch basin leads.
  4. Coordinate surveying activities for the construction layout of connection installations.
  5. Collaborate with Sewer Operations personnel to prepare cost estimates for public sewer connections servicing commercial developments.
  6. Assist applicants, consultants, and contractors with their servicing requirements for both commercial and residential projects.
  7. Research and disseminate technical information regarding sewer and water infrastructure to the public.
  8. Address general inquiries related to sewer servicing from the public, private sector, and external agencies.
  9. Provide technical assistance to other departments concerning service connection installations.
  10. Adhere to existing policies, procedures, and regulations governing sewer and water permits and connections.
  11. Maintain accurate records and files, and perform additional technical duties as required to support the operational needs of the branch.

Qualifications

Education and Experience: Completion of a technical program in applied sciences along with significant relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience in municipal infrastructure and construction.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Extensive knowledge of civil, mechanical, and piping drafting, along with mechanical and piping layout.
  • Strong understanding of engineering mathematics and familiarity with engineering methodologies.
  • Proficient in standard engineering terminology.
  • Knowledge of surveying techniques and relevant field experience.
  • Solid understanding of municipal design principles, inspection protocols, construction methodologies, and materials.
  • Familiarity with City computer systems such as ePlan, POSSE, Hansen, Topobase, Word, and Excel.
  • Experience with AutoCAD/Civil 3D is advantageous.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with colleagues.
  • Capability to interpret engineering drawings and perform design drafting.
  • Aptitude for performing complex technical and mathematical calculations.
  • Ability to thrive in a team-oriented environment with minimal supervision while managing multiple tasks effectively.
  • Competence in providing accurate and comprehensive information to the public.
  • Skill in evaluating work methods and suggesting appropriate improvements.

This position may be eligible for a Flexible Work Program, allowing staff to work remotely from locations within a reasonable commuting distance from their City worksite.
