Position Overview:

The Housing Overdose Prevention and Support Worker plays a vital role within the Housing Overdose Prevention and Support (HOPS) Team. Under the guidance of the Team Lead and Harm Reduction Teams Manager, this position focuses on delivering harm reduction services to individuals residing in supportive housing and shelter environments. Key responsibilities include facilitating witnessed consumption, responding to overdose situations, developing safety plans, and providing education on safer substance use practices.

Core Responsibilities:

  1. Deliver a range of harm reduction services to individuals in supportive housing and shelter settings, including the distribution and recovery of harm reduction supplies.
  2. Monitor and assess overdose symptoms, responding effectively with naloxone and rescue breathing techniques.
  3. Educate residents on overdose response strategies and assist in creating personalized safety plans related to substance use.
  4. Support the peer responder program by offering guidance and debriefing sessions for peer responders, fostering connections between residents and peer workers.
  5. Collaborate with partner organizations to provide training and enhance the skills of peer-led initiatives.
  6. Facilitate access to local resources addressing substance use, social issues, and overall health and wellness.
  7. Utilize brief assessments and active listening to de-escalate crises effectively.
  8. Maintain accurate client records and documentation, including critical incident reports as necessary.
  9. Work closely with housing operators to develop and implement shared safety and care plans, ensuring clear communication of resident concerns.
  10. Adhere to safety protocols to maintain a secure environment for all program spaces.
  11. Perform additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Diploma in health or social services or a comparable combination of education and experience.
  • At least one year of relevant experience in harm reduction service delivery.
  • First Aid certification and experience in overdose response, including the administration of naloxone.
  • Training or experience in non-violent and anti-oppressive crisis intervention techniques.
  • Strong knowledge of local health and social service resources.
  • Valid Class 5 BC Driver's License is preferred.
  • Ability to engage respectfully with Indigenous communities, employing a trauma-informed and decolonial perspective.
  • Understanding of harm reduction principles and their application in support work.
  • Capacity to work in diverse environments, including outdoor settings and around substance use.
  • Excellent communication and conflict resolution skills, with a collaborative approach to teamwork.
  • Ability to adapt to a self-directed work environment and respond to community needs.
