Role Overview:

The Indigenous Workforce Specialist plays a vital role in advancing the City’s commitment to achieving miyo-pimatisiwin (the good life for all). This position is responsible for designing and executing initiatives that align with the TRC Call to Action #92, aimed at enhancing employment opportunities for Indigenous Peoples within the City of Saskatoon. Key responsibilities include:

  • Identifying, developing, and implementing programs and strategies focused on the recruitment, advancement, and career development of Indigenous individuals.
  • Collaborating with both internal and external stakeholders to pinpoint barriers and opportunities that facilitate the attraction, employment, and retention of Indigenous talent.
  • Creating, monitoring, and analyzing organizational metrics to assess progress and provide recommendations for enhancing Indigenous employment across all levels.
  • Partnering with internal leadership to evaluate and suggest improvements to human resources strategies, policies, and programs that support Indigenous employment.
  • Establishing and nurturing a robust outreach network to promote Indigenous employment.

Candidate Profile:

The ideal candidate will possess:

  • Proven Trust and Integrity: Ability to foster and maintain effective relationships with key stakeholders in the Indigenous Community, as well as with City leaders and employees.
  • Project Management Expertise: Skills in planning, organizing, and problem-solving to identify gaps and implement effective programs.
  • Experience as a Change Agent: Capability to understand and navigate initiatives that may lead to change and assist others in adapting.
  • Exceptional Communication Skills: Proficiency in articulating ideas and concepts clearly, both verbally and in writing, including formal presentations.
  • Political Acumen: Skill in navigating complex governmental and organizational dynamics to achieve desired outcomes.

Qualifications:

To be successful in this role, candidates typically will have:

  • A degree in commerce, business administration, Indigenous Studies, or a related field.
  • Four to six years of relevant experience in human resources, particularly in roles that enhance the employment of Indigenous individuals.
  • In-depth knowledge of Indigenous traditional and contemporary cultures, political structures, history, and lived experiences.
  • Strong understanding of the governance of Indigenous communities.
  • Familiarity with human rights, occupational health and safety, and labor legislation, along with experience in unionized environments.
