MRI Technologist, Medical Imaging

The MRI Technologist is responsible for conducting magnetic resonance imaging examinations following established departmental protocols. This role encompasses a variety of tasks including managing requisitions, inputting pertinent data into the radiology information system, preparing examination trays, and ensuring patient readiness for procedures. The technologist operates advanced imaging machinery, processes and archives data, and monitors patients throughout the imaging process, ensuring equipment functionality. The position may require flexibility to work evening, night, and weekend shifts.

Key Responsibilities

  • Execute MRI examinations in compliance with established protocols by managing requisitions and related documentation, including laboratory forms, correlating clinical history with the procedure, positioning patients, and explaining the imaging process. Administer venipuncture for contrast media injections as instructed by the Radiologist, operate imaging equipment, and verify technical results to meet departmental standards.
  • Observe and monitor patients during procedures, addressing potential reactions to contrast media or other emergencies in line with facility policies; may be required to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation in emergencies.
  • Conduct imaging studies utilizing MRI technology and departmental information systems by verifying patient identification, collating images with requisitions, and retrieving previous studies as necessary. Report any equipment malfunctions to the Supervisor.
  • Ensure efficient workflow in the designated area by confirming requisition information aligns with departmental standards, managing inpatient examination durations, and coordinating with departmental porters.
  • Carry out quality control tasks such as scheduling and conducting equipment tests per manufacturer guidelines, documenting results, and identifying malfunctioning equipment for repair. Notify the Supervisor of any quality control concerns for appropriate action.

Qualifications

  • Certification with CAMRT in Magnetic Resonance Imaging.
  • Completion of an Intravenous Therapy training course when required by site practice, along with a minimum of one year of relevant experience or an equivalent combination of education and training.
  • Basic Life Support (BCLS) certification in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).
  • At least two years of recent experience in a pediatric setting.

Additional Skills

  • In-depth knowledge of standards and guidelines for Medical Imaging practitioners as established by CAMRT and other relevant professional associations.
  • Understanding of evidence-based practices related to MRI.
  • Familiarity with organizational policies, procedures, and standards of care, including safe operational practices with imaging equipment.
  • Knowledge of current MRI theories and practices within a client-centered care model.
  • Commitment to understanding and supporting the Truth & Reconciliation Commission's initiatives and their relevance to healthcare.
  • Awareness of social, economic, and historical factors affecting Indigenous communities, along with a commitment to cultural safety and anti-racism.
