Overview

Reporting to the Senior Director of Institutional & Strategic Priorities, the Head of Institutional Initiatives is tasked with driving transformation through institutional-level policies and program initiatives. This role is pivotal in challenging existing frameworks and fostering cultural evolution through innovative initiatives. The incumbent will oversee the Policy & Program unit, collaborating closely with both internal and external stakeholders across all levels of the university.

The Director of Equity and Inclusion Programs also offers guidance on highly sensitive and confidential matters crucial to the institution. This position participates in university committees and working groups as an advisor on equity and anti-racism policies, providing leadership on significant and cross-institutional priorities.

Key Responsibilities

Strategic Leadership

  • Directs the strategic vision of the EDI-R Office's Policy & Programs portfolio.
  • Provides leadership in crafting long-term strategic plans to promote equity, diversity, inclusion, and anti-racism throughout the University, offering expert advice to senior administrators, faculty, staff, and students on related issues.
  • Engages with the university community to explore and address equity and anti-racism matters, focusing on protected groups.
  • Represents the EDI-R leadership team, collaborating with various offices across campus.
  • Serves on committees addressing challenges faced by historically marginalized communities.
  • Consults with senior decision-makers on equity and anti-racism issues, ensuring confidentiality and sensitivity are maintained.
  • Works with the Inclusive Communications team to develop communications regarding equity and anti-racism.
  • Maintains a comprehensive understanding of best practices in equity and anti-racism.
  • Builds strong relationships with students, staff, and faculty to gather input on key initiatives.

Program Development and Implementation

  • Evaluates and develops new strategies and programs to eliminate systemic barriers and foster a culture of equity and anti-racism.
  • Oversees the planning, implementation, monitoring, and annual reporting on cross-institutional priorities.
  • Utilizes project management techniques to ensure effective management of equity and anti-racism initiatives.
  • Develops strategies to support equitable access to education and reviews university practices through an equity lens.
  • Stays informed on current literature and legal frameworks related to equity and anti-racism.

Policy Development and Oversight

  • Leads the creation and review of institutional policies from an equity perspective.
  • Analyzes existing policies to identify areas for enhancement in addressing equity issues.
  • Collaborates with stakeholders to gather feedback on proposed policies.
  • Ensures alignment of policies with legal requirements and institutional values.
  • Monitors the implementation of policies and contributes to necessary strategies.
  • Prepares reports on policy outcomes for internal and external stakeholders.

Risk Management and Compliance

  • Conducts internal audits to ensure policy compliance and effectiveness.
  • Monitors risk strategies for relevance and effectiveness.
  • Maintains a database of risk management activities.
  • Provides regular updates to the Senior Director regarding risk management.
  • Ensures adherence to record-keeping requirements and confidentiality guidelines.

Leadership and Staff Development

  • Leads the Policy & Programs unit.
  • Recruits and manages staff to achieve unit goals.
  • Coaches and develops team members for professional growth.
  • Conducts performance evaluations and ensures adherence to review processes.

Qualifications

  • Master's degree in a relevant field, preferably focused on human rights, diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Progressive experience in senior roles addressing equity and inclusion in complex organizations.
  • Proven project management experience with a focus on strategic alignment.
  • Experience in implementing corporate equity policies.
  • Demonstrated staff management experience with a focus on performance.
  • Experience leading large-scale change initiatives.
  • Strong understanding of the historical and social contexts of equity and anti-racism.
  • Significant experience collaborating with diverse stakeholders.
  • Expertise in developing equity-related education and programming.
  • Strong organizational and project management skills.
  • Ability to handle sensitive matters with discretion.
  • Advanced proficiency in relevant software and research methodologies.
