Bedford, Quebec, Canada The Government of Nova Scotia Full time

Competition #: 43887

Department: Public Works

Type of Employment: Permanent

Union Status: NSGEU - NSPG

About Us

The task of constructing and upholding our Provincial infrastructure is significant.

The Department of Public Works is tasked with overseeing Nova Scotia's extensive network of roads, highways, and bridges. Our responsibilities include managing substantial capital construction initiatives, snow and ice control services, and road maintenance and repair operations.

We are in search of an Engineering and Surveying Technician. If you are interested in an opportunity that allows you to engage with the natural beauty of Nova Scotia while applying your practical skills to support the development and construction of diverse projects, this position may be ideal for you.

About Our Opportunity

As an Engineering and Surveying Technician, you will undertake a variety of surveying and engineering tasks in support of the administration, upkeep, and construction of Provincial highways and bridges.

Your responsibilities will include supervising contracts and a crew, preparing right-of-way plans, and calculating vertical and horizontal control for infrastructure projects. You will also gather, compile, and present data collected during fieldwork and assess material quantities required for various projects. The information you gather will directly contribute to the development and construction of projects within the District.

Primary Responsibilities

In this role, your primary focus will be assisting the Project Engineer in executing the Capital Program. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Supporting contract administration;
  • Collecting, compiling, and presenting fieldwork data;
  • Assessing material quantities for project use;
  • Assisting supervisors and managers with project planning, design, permitting, and oversight;
  • Conducting field surveys to verify property, highway, and project boundaries;
  • Assisting in supervising personnel and contractors on construction sites.

Much of your work will occur outdoors in various weather conditions, often on busy roads or in remote construction areas.

Qualifications and Experience

A degree from a two (2) year Survey or Civil Technology program is essential.

Frequent travel within your designated area is a requirement; therefore, a valid driver's license and access to a reliable vehicle are necessary.

The ideal candidate will:

  • Be a self-driven individual capable of working independently with minimal oversight;
  • Be an effective team player;
  • Have experience with current AutoCAD software tailored for surveying or engineering applications;
  • Be knowledgeable about the Occupational Health and Safety Act, Regulations, and safe working practices;
  • Be proficient in spreadsheet software, word processing, and email applications.

Familiarity with bridge and highway construction design standards, contract specifications, the Land Surveyors Act, and experience in a unionized environment would be advantageous.

Maintaining a professional and courteous demeanor while upholding high standards for client and customer service is crucial. In this role, you will interact with the public, supervise a team, and oversee the work of contract personnel. Therefore, strong verbal and written communication skills, the ability to build relationships with clients, and proactive thinking are vital for success.

We will evaluate the qualifications and competencies through various methods, including written examinations, standardized tests, oral presentations, interviews, and reference checks.

Benefits

Depending on employment status and union agreements, the Government of Nova Scotia provides a comprehensive range of benefits, including a Defined Benefit Pension Plan, Health, Dental, Life Insurance, General Illness, Short and Long Term Disability, Vacation, and Employee and Family Assistance Programs.

Working Conditions

Your work environment will primarily be outdoors. While some time will be spent in an office, the majority of your work will take place outside, regardless of the season or weather conditions, often on busy roads or in isolated construction areas.

Additional Information

A monthly vehicle allowance is available for Engineering Survey Technicians, with the current rate for the fiscal year being $1,220.85/month, or $14,650.20/year. This allowance is subject to annual adjustments based on the Nova Scotia Private Transportation Index as calculated by Statistics Canada.

This position may require extended hours or overtime and will involve significant travel throughout the province using your personal vehicle.
