Position Overview

The Manitoba Government is in search of a dedicated 2nd Class Power Engineer to oversee operations at the Central Powerhouse facility. Employment Conditions:

  • Must hold a valid 2nd Class Power Engineering Certification recognized by the Province of Manitoba.
  • Must have a current Manitoba Class 5F driver's license.
  • Must provide a satisfactory Criminal Record Check.
  • Must be physically capable of performing essential duties, including medium to heavy lifting, climbing, walking, crouching, and kneeling, while adhering to all required personal protective equipment (PPE) and working in confined spaces.
  • Must be available for on-call duties, work independently, and be exposed to outdoor conditions, steam, chemicals, noise, and dust.
Qualifications:
Essential:
  • Manitoba 2nd Class Power Engineering Certificate.
  • Experience in a First Class or Second Class Plant as a Shift Engineer.
  • Familiarity with the Workplace Health and Safety Act and relevant safety regulations.
  • Strong interpersonal skills for effective communication with various stakeholders.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Capability to work autonomously while demonstrating initiative.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills, with the ability to plan and execute tasks efficiently.
Desired:
  • Experience with water treatment and life safety systems.
  • Familiarity with Building Management Systems.
Key Responsibilities:
Reporting to the Chief Power Engineer, the successful candidate will ensure the safe and efficient operation of a 1st Class High Pressure Heating Plant and its auxiliary systems. Responsibilities include supervising heating/cooling systems, water supply, and electrical generation equipment, responding to fire alarms, and monitoring energy consumption, steam and water pressures, and cooling systems. The role involves conducting chemical tests and managing chemical additions for boiler, chilled water, and cooling tower systems, as well as testing emergency generators and fire booster pumps. Adherence to safety regulations and inspection protocols is paramount. This position may also involve providing guidance and oversight to junior technical staff, including Assistant Operating Engineers and Maintenance Assistants.
