Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and compassionate Veterinary Technician to join our team at the City of Toronto. As a key member of our Animal Services department, you will play a critical role in providing exceptional care to animals in our shelters and clinics.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide direct animal care and husbandry, including feeding, watering, grooming, and maintaining sanitary conditions in the clinic/shelter.
  • Monitor and direct daily clinic/shelter operations, ensuring all scheduled treatments are performed and keeping veterinarian/manager informed.
  • Assist veterinarians with treatments, surgical and dental procedures, including dental x-rays.
  • Coordinate and participate in events, projects, outreach, volunteer, and foster programs related to Animal Services.
  • Triage patients/animals as they are admitted to the clinic/shelter, using humane handling and restraint techniques.
  • Oversee and participate in physical and behavioral assessments of animals, performing cursory examinations on animals upon intake.
  • Identify and report animal health concerns to attending veterinarian or manager.
  • Monitor patients/animals during anesthesia and recovery, and when receiving treatment due to illness or injury.
  • Input and maintain accurate patient/animal records, and all necessary drug and surgery logs.
  • Operate and maintain work location equipment, such as industrial dish washer, anesthetic machine, and pathological incinerator.
  • Administer vaccinations, diagnostic tests, medications, and treatments to patients/animals, and humane euthanasia as directed by attending veterinarian.
  • Collect and prepare biological samples for external laboratory testing, culture, or microscopic examination.
  • Perform routine internal laboratory procedures, such as fecal floatation exams and skin scraping.
  • Provide in-person, telephone, and email client services, answering questions to ensure good customer service.
  • Complete written reports and forms as required, including providing statistical information concerning tasks completed, staff issues, accident/incident reports, etc.
Requirements
  • Post-secondary education from an Ontario Association of Veterinary Technicians accredited college program.
  • Designation of Registered status and membership in good standing with the Ontario Association of Veterinary Technicians.
  • Extensive experience providing direct animal care and animal husbandry, working in an animal shelter environment.
  • Experience in the use of a computerized data and records management system, and standard PC applications.
  • Valid Province of Ontario, Class "D" Driver's License, and ability to obtain and maintain City's equipment operating permits and requirements.
  • Immunization against rabies, and bi-yearly titre to determine immunity level.
  • Good physical condition, agility, and strength, including ability to stand for long periods, manage and lift animals, and work in all weather conditions.
  • Ability to work rotating shifts, including day, afternoon, night, weekend, and holidays, and standby as required.
  • Knowledge and understanding of working in high-quality, high-volume spay-neuter clinics.
  • Ability to orient and train new staff, provide work direction, training, coaching/mentoring, and demonstrate leadership skills.
  • Ability to research, develop, and deliver educational programs.
  • Ability to work in a customer service environment, with excellent interpersonal, problem-solving, and conflict management skills.
  • Ability to handle and facilitate escalated issues and/or disputes with members of the public, and utilize mediation or escalated tactics to successfully resolve conflicts.
  • A strong understanding of animal behavior, and ability to handle a wide variety of animals, including injured and possibly dangerous animals.
  • Strong organizational skills, with ability to multi-task, and work well under time constraints.
  • Ability to work on TAS SNYP Mobile Clinic.
  • Ability to develop and maintain productive working relationships with employees and management, promote a positive work environment, and handle staff conflict.
  • Excellent and effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • A good understanding of Animal Services programs, regulations, and legislation pertaining to animals.
  • Thorough understanding of issues affecting Toronto residents, businesses, and visitors.
  • Ability to use or learn to use various technical devices related to the position.
